My #Top10 of the semester

Most of my top 10 social media posts will come from Twitter, seeing that (A) it’s the platform we used the most this semester and (B) my Instagram game wasn’t as strong considering I was rather new to the platform (it also doesn’t help that I don’t really like Instagram).

Of note: I changed Twitter’s midway through the semester, creating an alternative one for the class before ending with my real one. The tweets will come from both accounts

Post No. 1

This tweet worked well because I targeted two rather famous and well-loved things in a specific market. Kyrie Irving was an NBA player who had just been traded to the Boston Celtics. So, when we were told to tweet out to a celebrity, I decided to include him and let him know about my favorite burger joint in Boston.

If I could amend this post, I would have tagged Boston Burger company, I didn’t think about doing that. Even though I didn’t, though, they still found this tweet and retweeted it.

As we discussed a few times in class, sharing a LinkedIn profile is actually a little bit more popular than it would seem at face value. I think that’s what happened here with this tweet. I do think a little bit of my sarcastic voice came through, which is also why it got a few engagements, rather than people just scrolling by it.

This tweet wasn’t one of our #FollowFriday assignments, but it probably should have been (this tweet specifically was for creating a Twitter List). Part of the reason this got so much love on Twitter is because I targeted student journalists who I personally know. Journalists are always checking Twitter, and the personal connection helped this post gain traction.

I wasn’t too surprised about this tweet getting some likes — I knew as soon as I broke out  #TalkWithTomer, there’d immediately be a few of my friends who found it funny and would throw a like. I was very surprised about the seven replies, though. I’m not sure if it was because of the hashtag, or because it was the first time I had publicly mentioned on Twitter that I was going to check out practice (which I should probably do more). I did get a few replies from friends, but I did also get two legitimate questions about the practice. That was cool, and I feel like it helped me establish myself on a new beat earlier.

Alexa and I tag-teamed this tweet, and I think it worked well for both of us. Targeting a “national holiday”, but particularly as one as popular as #NationalTacoDay, helped us both draw in some likes. I do think there’s also a novelty/ridiculousness factor that played in with getting Taco Bell twice in two days for lunch.

This tweet actually wasn’t one of our “homework assignments” per say, but it did really well because it capitalized on what was going on in the moment. We had to promote our Periscope challenge. I think the first reason this post did well was because I quote tweeted Professor Grygiel’s tweet. That meant I would’t have to explain as much what was going on in my tweet. Instead, I could just try and tease out a bit of what we were going on (getting makeup applied), ask fro a favor (give the team hearts) and try and be a little funny with the irony of “school good,” to draw in some hearts (both on Twitter, and on Periscope).

This got some love because it was personal to me. Both my parents are Israeli and most people who know me generally know that (my name is also an Israeli name, so it usually gives that away from the start). Gal Gadot is one of the few Israelis who has become a mega-star in the United States. So, I get excited seeing her in any platform. Some of my friends also know that Jimmy Fallon has been one of my favorite late-night talk show hosts. So seeing the two interact was awesome.

This was another tweet that, even though this was a class assignment, it was on-brand with what my Twitter actually is. I cover football for The Daily Orange, and I was at the Clemson game covering that as well. I wrote a story off the game, and then a column the following Sunday. So creating this Twitter moment was consistent with what I would normally do. And, because the Clemson win was so shocking, it still had traction even a few days after the event.

The most fulfilling moment of my life #NHsmc

Simply put, I think this did really well because there was a cute dog in the photo. People love cute dogs, and this was no exception.

Post No. 10

This was my most-liked Instagram post. I think two things were going on here. One, it was a personal connection — I had told a lot of my friends about the trip I staffed this summer and how absolutely amazing it was, but I hadn’t really shown them many photos. So getting to put pictures to my stories I think was appreciated by some of my friends. Also, I’m a far from a photographer (and if anything, the phone I am using is pretty old with a mediocre camera by today’s standards), but the landscapes I took pictures off are beautiful, which is something that also draws people in.

Klout analysis

When we were first told to get Klout, and I checked, my score was at a 46. Now it’s up to a 48, so I thought I was making progress; however, I checked the “measure” section of the website, and at one point I was up to a 49 (for reference, back in September, my Klout was 43, I just didn’t have Klout yet). So, I’ve generally gone in an upward trend. I’d attribute my slightly declining Klout score to the fact that I tweeted very little over Thanksgiving break, which probably impacted it. But, if I keep on the same trend I’ve been on since September, I do think I’d be able to crack that 50-point plateau.
