Personal Influence Growth & Analysis / Top 10 Posts

Part 1

  • Twitter followers at start of course: 491
  • Twitter followers at end of course: 503
  • Percentage followers gained: 2%
  • Klout score at start of course: 40
  • Klout score at the end of the course: 26

I tried many techniques to increase my social media influence and following throughout this semester. On Twitter, what worked best was when I used a popular hashtag that had a following behind it. I found that those who followed the hashtag followed me after I used it, most likely because the content I was producing was relevant to their likes and interest.

I’m confused by my decrease in my Klout score because I kept up with my social media throughout the semester. One thing that stuck out that could have contributed to the decrease in score is that I kept up with my professional Instagram for this class than my personal account, which has a larger influence base. One theme I noticed throughout my work was that my content can always be more original, so that is something I would like to work on in the future.

Part 1

  1. This was my best performing social media post. I posted multiple photos as per the assigned class strategy. It is my interpretation that this post did so well due to the multiple rich media combined with the identity of “loving old people.”

2. This tweet did not have any rich media, but still did well. This was a tweet that was aiming to replicate another top performing tweet, and it did meet that standard. I noticed that some of my best tweets were making fun of dating culture. I copied that concept because it performed so well previously, but made it timely to the Olympics, which were occurring at that time.

3. This tweet assignment was to make a poll. I choose to do my poll on The Bachelor, which was about to air its season finale. This pulled on the identity of Bachelor Nation, along with a comedic aspect with the “Chris Harrison” option. He was not a contestant, but rather the host of the show, so it would have been impossible for him to win. 19 votes is a great number, however, I think if I had asked a more original question it could have gotten even more. Everyone was talking about who he was going to choose, both on and off social media.

4. I learned how to create original video within the Twitter app with multiple segments for this post. This worked well because it was timely to the horrific snow storm that was occurring at SU. Also, tagging @SyracuseU proved to be successful in gaining engagement. The use of rich media most definitely contributed to the success of this post. I did notice that there was a lot of content similar to mine surrounding this project, so again, I would like to work on my original content.

5. I learned how to use Google Trends for this post in comparing the usage of two different phrases or hashtags on social media across a specific location. I compared #nuggets to #tenders to gage what people were using most and the map exemplified a heavy majority to #nuggets. The nugget versus tender debate has been long standing and one most people can relate to, so this pulled on that identity and got people to engage with the tweet to input their own opinions.

6. This was our Periscope assignment via the twitter app. I had only tested the product before, so this was my first time using it in real time. I think what worked well here was live content in conjunction with a very likable subject: a puppy. I think the best strategy for this post was that all four of us promoted the content and each other.

7. This tweet worked due to the timely aspect of it. The assignment was to create a thread with the blue line, but this first tweet performed much better than the other. This was the day after the Super Bowl, so the subject was fresh on people’s minds. Also, making fun of oneself like I did, usually works when it is done in a relatable manor. If I had added a gif or some type of rich media to this, I believe it would have been higher up in the list of top 10.

8. This tweet was sent out during the abrupt Snapchat update that upset most Snap users. The assignment here was to promote ourselves on another platform and instead of doing it in a more serious way, I thought it would be most successful to do this in a comedic fashion. I actually gained a number of new Snapchat followers from this post, so it was successful.

9. In this post we were asked to use at least one trending emoji in our caption. I had never known about the trending emoji list and I think it really helped gain engagement with my post. Social media users relate to content they feel they could also create, so it is important to pay attention to the trends occurring online. Also, I think the use of hashtags in the post helped gain my follower base.

10. This post was part of my marketing plan for my meme assignment. While, I am not sure it contributed to my Imugr views because the link would have had to been copy and pasted into a browser, it did perform well as its own post on Instagram. I think learning how to create memes and having the opportunity to test them on our social media pages was beneficial. The process to create and post a meme was much simpler than I thought and something I can implement for future projects. What worked best for this post was how easy it is to consume. The words are easy to ready and Kanye is something that draws attention from many different audiences.
