The Road to Fame – An Aspiring Twitter Star

Part 1: Influence

During this semester, I made it a goal of mine to create a larger following on Twitter and to expand my network. I worked toward this goal by branching out to communities that I am a part of and care about such as Syracuse University, Syracuse Football, Boston, Tech Groups, etc. I first started to increase my network by following members of groups that are important to me on Twitter and other social platforms. Once I gained a larger network of followers, I began to Tweet about and engage myself on Twitter within these groups to influence people who are active within these networks.

For me, creating a lot of rich media with photos, links, GIFs, hashtags, etc. is what really helped me to increase my influence. I noticed that I received the most impressions on Tweets when I created media rich content about things I was (and my network) were passionate about. I also began to include important Twitter handles in my tweets that I knew would pull in a larger following than just my immediate followers.

For me, something that I noticed did not work as effectively as rich media was text-heavy tweets that failed to include some sort of outreach (Twitter handles, hashtags, photos, etc.). Tweets that didn’t include any kind of media or outreach received significantly less engagement than others that did. Humor was also something I found to help with engagement on Tweets.

Over the last 28 days, my Tweets earned 9,684 impressions (the amount of times people saw Tweet on my Twitter account). During this 28 day period I received approximately 284 impressions per day.

Part 2: Execution

This was one of my first Tweets while in COM 427. In this Tweet I included rich media through a link to another article and a meaningful hashtag (social media). I believe that this Tweet had a good amount of impressions due to the engaging content and the relatable hashtag.

  • Impressions: 443
  • Total Engagements:  23
  • Detail Expands: 13
  • Hashtag Clicks: 5
  • Profile Clicks: 2

For this Tweet, I used the Follow Friday hashtag that we learned about in class. I believe that this hashtag helped to receive some engagement because of the high volume of searches for this on Fridays. I also included 2 popular handles among the Syracuse Football community which also helped to receive some traction. I believe I could have received an even higher volume of impressions if I added a few hashtags related to Syracuse Football or even generic football hashtags.

  • Impressions: 654
  • Total Engagements:  28
  • Profile Clicks: 13
  • Detail Expands: 10

With this Tweet, I included a photo of my new business cards along with the handle to the company from which the cards were made. By using the photo of the cards and including MOO’s handle, I was definitely able to pull some engagement in.

This Tweet was interesting because I was using one platform to promote another platform of mine. I have never done something like this before but the engaging photo definitely helped to receive some views and clicks.

I decided to try including a GIF that I could relate to my Tweet. Along with the GIF, I also tagged Chipotle’s handle in my Tweet (and they even favorited my Tweet) which definitely helped to increase my impressions.

For only having 43 followers, this Instagram received a decent amount of likes. I used an engaging hashtag and set the location to Newhouse to pull in some views. I’m sure the adorable puppy helped too!

For this Tweet, I created a Twitter Moment that was compiled of students’ Tweets from when Tasty came to Newhouse. The rich media definitely pulled in a lot of impressions for me. Newhouse also retweeted my Twitter Moment which drove a lot of traffic to this Tweet as well as to my profile.

This was my Twitter Card which I paid $5 to promote. It was interesting to see how while only 249 of the impressions were promoted, 931 were organic. The use of hashtags as well as the link to my meme definitely helped with engagements as well.

With this Tweet, I used a photo of Bird Library along with the hashtag studious (which is relevant now with finals approaching). I also set the location to Bird Library which I believe helped to increase impressions.

For this Instagram video, I included many relatable hashtags, set the location to the Carrier Dome, and tagged SU Football’s handle in the caption. All of these factors definitely helped increase the amount of views on this video.

As the semester progressed, my Tweets and Instagram posts continuously began to receive more engagement and I began to gain a larger network and following. I became more influential on all platforms by using strategic methods such as planning timing of posts, using meaningful hashtags, including rich media content, tagging others, etc., to increase my social activity. I have and will continue to progress on all platforms and continue to grow my network on Twitter.
