Top 10 Tweets of the Semester

Before I started  this class, I really only used Twitter as a social media platform, to see what people were talking about or retweeting the things that people were talking about. I had never really seen it as a place, that I could mold myself  to create a brand and show my following who I was. At first it was very hard to try and think of something clever, that someone would stop scrolling and read what what you are talking about. I’ve learned that in order to achieve your “true” voice you need to make sure that those 140 characters are impactful, because that’s all you get. I’ve come to realize that hashtags are everything. They are essential in reaching certain audiences and establishing yourself in certain spaces. Lastly, media goes a long way, users are more likely to click on a Tweet and engage with it if they see something that catches your eye.

  1. Total: Impressions  254   Engagements 30  Engagement Rate 11.6%

When I took this photo on my way to class one morning, it really reminded me of how in this day of age we sometimes forget the beauty that is around us, because we are so consumed by technology that we sue everyday. That day really was “extra Fall.” I feel like this tweet really got the attention that it did, because of the use of the image. It really stands out as you are scrolling down a timeline

2. Total: Impressions  271   Engagements 11  Engagement Rate 4.1%

This was one of the first Tweets that I did for the class, and where I was still getting familiar with the use of hashtags. When I was making the Tweet, I was thinking in my head, “What words in the actual body of my tweet could I hashtag, and have that tag be one that would be able to a trending one. I think this thought process is also a good to use when you are trying to formulate Tweets, because it will give you more room to say stuff, if you can hashtag certain words in your body, rather than just add them all at the end.

3. Total: Impressions  778   Engagements 75  Engagement Rate 9.6%

This was my second Tweet that I did for the class, when we did #followfriday. I had never done a Tweet of this nature, especially when it came to “@” other accounts. I think Impressions and Engagements on this were higher because I was retweeted by two of these accounts that I “@”, which made my account visible to others on their page. The #followfriday, is also a hashtag that is used a lot, so people could have ran into my tweet as they were searching the tag.

4. Total: Impressions  339   Engagements 43  Engagement Rate: 12.7%

This is one of my early tweets that I did for the class, and for the assignment where we had to Tweet a piece of media that represented real life social media. I think the biggest part of this Tweet that got so much attention was the picture itself. Polaroids are something that have come back from the dead, and a lot of younger people have started using them again. The picture also has a nice filter on it, which makes it stand out to people more as they are scrolling through their feed. It was in the Tweet as well, that I found out that #socialmedia hashtag can help you get a lot of engagement when you use it.

5. Total: Impressions  369   Engagements 24  Engagement Rate 6.5%

This was probably one of my favorite Tweets that I did for the class. It was for our Tweet assignment, where we had to make a collage of photos in a Tweet. I had recently went to the Keuka Lake Wine Trail for my birthday, and took a lot of pics. I thought this would be a great opportunity to engage the actual company that puts on the wine tour after I saw that the had a Twitter account. By “@” them I was able to get a response back from them, and also other engagements from accounts that had to do with wine.

Total: Impressions  319   Engagements 23  Engagement Rate 7.2%

6. I made this tweet a couple weeks after #NewsEngagementDay. The day that we were all tweeting, I had gone on the Newhouse website and filled out a survey, and than weeks later I got an email saying how I had won the drawing, and it just so happened to be a $25 Itunes gift card. I definitely thought it be best to Tweet back out to Newhosue for doing this. I think this goes hand in hand with consumer and business relationships, if you ever receive products or anything like that, I think it’s good to Tweet back to the people who are doing these good things for you.

7. Total: Impressions  345   Engagements 10  Engagement Rate 2.9%

I made this Tweet when we were assigned to reach out to someone that we follow who has a big social media following, and I chose Derrel Smith who happens to be a Newhouse Alum, and also played in the NFL. the first thing I did was look through his account to see what he was about, I than noticed that he was a food enthusiast. He had a really cool food blog. I thought that a good way to get a response back would be by Tweeting out his blog and “@” him, and it just so happened that he retweeted my Tweet, and also replied back to me.

8. Total: Impressions  290   Engagements 31  Engagement Rate 10.7%

This Tweet was done when I was checking out an art showcase at the Syracuse Community Folk Art Center. I felt that the image was a powerful one that didn’t need a lot of words for the point to get across. I also “@” the center and they responded right back to me and followed me, so that was really cool.

9. Total: Impressions  473   Engagements 24  Engagement Rate: 5.1%

This was one of my more recent posts that I was able to incorporate a trending hashtag that is used on Mondays, and also a trending emoji that I looked up. I really like trending hashtags that focus on specific days of the week, because depending on what it is, if that day has it, it will always offer you something that you can get engaged in. Once again I think the use of the image made it that much more engaging, rather than just typing a quote.

10. Total: Impressions  549   Engagements 66  Engagement Rate 10.2%

This is one of my Tweets that received a lot of engagement. I deifntley have to give credit for the image on this one. This Tweet was for the assignment where we had to make the dimensions of the image fit for it to be viewed while scrolling in feed. The image really jumps out at you when you read the list of names, regardless if you know them are not. I made sure to “@” the company who made the shirt, because its a really powerful and important issue they are fighting in regards to the women and men who have been killed by police brutality. I made sure to use their companies hashtag as well, which upon clicking leads to a lot of Tweets that surround issues like this. The creator of the shirt Retweeted my tweet as well, which definitely helped with the engagement.

Total: Impressions  892   Engagements 82  Engagement Rate 9.2%

This was my highest ranked Tweet for the semester that did not have a class hashtag, and took place when the Mother of Trayvon Martin was on campus

  1. This is great, man! You’ve got a great eye for photos and you involve yourself in important, trending conversations. Your last tweet is especially powerful – what a captivating statement. Overall I think you’re well on your way to becoming quite an influential Twitter user!

  2. Like Steve said, you’re really good with visuals. Tapping into audiences that respond to social issues seems to show great engagement. If I could give you a title, you’d be the “Twitter King” for our class! You did a great job tweeting messages that supplement our homework assignments.

  3. Nicely done! You can certainly tell how much you’ve grown since the course started. I think you do a really great job of closing the gap between your real and virtual self. I always feel as though your Tweets are an accurate depiction of who you are and what you’re interested in. It seems simple, but this is often overlooked by many. Your Twitter voice is believable and authentic, and you have a great eye for photography. I agree that hashtags are everything when starting out and looking to build engagement, and it looks like it worked!
