Twitter Personal Growth Analysis

Throughout the course of this class, my tweeting skills have improved a lot and network has grown dramatically. Personally, I never thought that being “social media-savvy” mattered this much, but that wasn’t until I saw a drastic change in the amount of traffic and attention that I receive on Twitter.

At the beginning of the semester, I had 163 followers, and a score of 18 on Klout, and currently, I have 209 followers, and a score of 38 on Klout. And, overall, I gained 38.3 Impressions from January 20th until April 20th. A big reason for the increase in both aspects is definitely due to my enrollment in this class. Twitter wasn’t really my primary social media outlet, so I didn’t tweet at all, pretty much, prior to our assignments. However, once I started tweeting, specifically using the #NHsmc hashtag, I started gaining followers and receiving more activity. Also, certain strategic tweets, such as my #motivationmonday tweet and my #ICYMI, which used popular hashtags to get my name out there and increase traffic definitely helped my growth. In terms of timing, I had to be strategic regarding when

Below, I will be listing my Top 10 Tweets that received the most impressions between the dates of January 20th and April 20th, and discussing in-depth the techniques I utilized as well as their effectiveness.

10) Impressions: 215, Engagements: 16, Engagement Rate: 7.4%

In the following tweet, you can see that it’s very important to accompany media with attractive, slightly lighthearted tweets. However, the key here is tagging another account, preferably a verified one, that is somehow related to your post, as that increases the chance of your content being noticed and retweeted. If a verified account does indeed do that, the likelihood of an increase in likes and followers is very high, which was exactly the case with me.

9) Impressions: 227, Engagements: 15, Engagement Rate: 6.6%

Humor, more often than not, attracts attention on social media, as does reliability. If your followers are able to relate to content you’ve created AND laugh about it, too, you’ve sold them. The reason this tweet probably didn’t receive that much love, though, was probably because of the posting time, as it was about 4AM in Egypt and nobody is really on social media during that time. When I posted this tweet, it was strategic because during that time, that meme was going viral, so putting my own original twist on it is sort of like hopping on the bandwagon and attracting attention while it’s still circulating.

8) Impressions: 229, Engagements: 34, Engagement Rate: 14.8%

The following tweet is an example of the first time I ever created and promoted a Twitter List. Again, you can see that the tweet is relatable and intriguing, and is accompanied attractive media which will increase clicks and engagements. It’s also surrounding the topic of “self-love”, which is something that my followers tweet a lot about, so it’s key to target and tailor your content to people’s tastes.

7) Impressions: 260, Engagements: 14, Engagement Rate: 5.4%

#hashtags, #hashtags, and #morehashtags. Hashtags do a really good job of targeting specific communities, spreading awareness, and gaining attention. Again, I attached a video to the tweet, which received about 43 media views, but the actual tweet contains several specific Syracuse-related hashtags that attracted a wide audience from the SU community.

6) Impressions: 267, Engagements: 28, Engagement Rate: 10.5%

Cross-promotion is also something of great importance in the social media world. It shows accessibility and connectivity and will more likely attract more people to your platforms. As mentioned earlier, humor is also a vital aspect, so attaching a light-hearted image along with the cross-promotional tweet is bound to get you attention and impressions.

5) Impressions: 280, Engagements: 9, Engagement Rate: 3.2%

Every year in the Spring, Fashion’s Conscience, a minority-based fashion organization on SU’s campus, hosts a fashion show. The show incorporates student-designer pieces, as well as actual designer pieces and a celebrity performer. So, in preparation, as well as for promotional purposes, I created a SoundCloud playlist including songs that were to played at the show. The event is widely popular on campus, so the tweet received quite a few engagements and therefore, SoundCloud plays.

4) Impressions: 285, Engagements: 1, Engagement Rate: 0.4%

For the Periscope assignment, I had a bit of difficulty finding content that I related to and would relate to my audiences, as well. When I finally did, the timing was completely off, which is why there aren’t that many engagements with the tweet. It was shared at 9:07 PM on a Saturday night, which was close to 4 AM in Egypt, so you can imagine that no one was really on social media during that time. Despite that, the tweet still received a good amount of impressions, which was probably due to the hashtags.

3) Impressions: 1831, Engagements: 16, Engagement Rate: 0.9%

For this tweet, I had to pay to promote it which was aimed to not only bring my account more attention, but also send people to the accompanying link to the meme shared through Imgur. I ended up creating the Twitter card incorrectly, and inputting the link to my profile, not the meme, which was counterproductive and completely messed up the amount of clicks that I could’ve received for this post. Nonetheless, the tweet still received a lot of impressions and at least guided people to the page I needed them to visit.

2) Impressions: 2,285, Engagements: 26, Engagement Rate: 1.1%

Using a popular, circulating hashtag in your content can also be a very good way of attracting attention. Based on the Klout analysis and Twitter Analytics, the traffic on my page spiked after posting this tweet. Beyonce was a very trending topic, at the time, and so was her speech at the Grammy’s, so reposting that accompanied by #ICYMI, reached a lot of audiences, without a doubt.

1)  Impressions: 28,584, Engagements: 776, Engagement Rate: 2.7%

To be completely honest, I never expected this tweet to have this much popularity. That weekend was extremely spontaneous, but completely amazing, because the famous poet, Reyna Biddy, was going to be in Syracuse performing and speaking at a banquet. I knew there was a lot of buzz surrounding the event, and that a lot of girls in the SU community were also big fans of hers. Fortunately enough, I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to her, and even get my copy of her book signed(!!!) In class, we were taught how to directly reach out to social media influencers, and were encouraged to always tag verified users in related posts, accompanied by effective hashtags. To my surprise, Reyna actually remembered/noticed me(!!!), and retweeted my post. Immediately, Reyna’s followers started following me and liking my tweet, and my account received a lot of traffic. As you can see, I also received 28,584 Impressions, which is nowhere near the amount of followers I have, so it’s obvious that the tweet spread dramatically and reached a wide audience.

  1. Congrats on becoming social media-savvy. I’m sure that a lot of us were worried about that in the beginning of this class and it’s great to see how far we have come. I enjoyed reading all of your tweets this semester and look forward to keeping up with you past #NHsmc . Your use of different media in your tweets made them really engaging and it comes as no surprise that they reached so many impressions. I think what you did really well with the assignments was showe a little bit of yourself in each one. I wasn’t just reading a tweet based on the assignment but you allowed your followers to stay connected with the real you. Keep up the great work!
