“We’re All in This Together” on Social Media

Nothing in this world is perfect, and social media is not an exception. There are many negative things about social media, whether it’s cyberbullying or just seeing what your friends are doing when they didn’t invite you, it happens to the best of us, but there are also many positives. A lot of friendships can be formed on social media and in the music industry, many collaborations can begin online.

I started using Twitter in 2012 during my sophomore year of high school. While I am active on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, I believe Twitter is the one with the power to unite people, which I know from personal experience. When I first joined Twitter, three of my best friends and I were embarrassingly huge fans of the band One Direction. From tweeting the band members daily, we found other people doing the same. We eventually started following this one girl from California that was a fan of the band and someone we found to be extremely funny. We began tweeting back and forth with each other, and I was even planning to meet her when my family and I would be in California during my winter break. There’s just no way that could have happened without social media.

In the music world, one artist complimenting another online can lead to a collaboration. This happened back in March when EDM producer, Zedd, complimented singer, Khalid, on his music.

Three days later, Khalid was in the studio working on their song together.

While the song has yet to be released, something magical is definitely coming, and we have Twitter to thank for that.

Whether the topic is music, movies, politics or relatable, everyday topics, social media gives people worldwide the opportunity to communicate and share their opinions with each other.

  1. I found your blog post really interesting because I wrote about how social media is pulling us apart. But, I really like the standpoint of music that you took to explain your argument. I do agree that music is powerful on social media and can bring fans together that share the same interests and values. The example with Khalid I found so interesting because I knew him in high school and his music would not have been as successful as it is today without the power of social media. Kylie Jenner played his song on her snapchat, and the rest is history as they say.

  2. I really appreciate how you used a personal example, from 2012, and then connected it to an example using celebrities, from this year. This truly showed how social media, on a small or large scale, has such a huge impact on people. Also, because of the time range of the different dates in this post, this shows the direction social media is headed; social media is an outlet that can be used for a wide range of topics, such as “fan-girling” to business ventures.
