In the midst of all the fame the show has achieved, there are many people who think the show glorifies suicide, and is an insult to people with mental illnesses.

One of the most controversial topics surrounding 13 Reasons Why, is the fact that Hannah Baker’s suicide was actually shown on screen. Many people involved with suicide prevention feel that showing the actual act is irresponsible and potentially dangerous.

On the other hand, fans of the show feel that showing Hannah’s suicide was important in order to spark conversation and prove that suicide is in no way easy.
I think that the show has definitely accomplished what it was meant to accomplish, which is starting a conversation about teenage suicide and showing viewers the power of a few kind words.
