The hashtag #SpaceyInSpace was an item that was notably trending on Twitter last month. Traffic started from this hashtag because of the Florida Panthers hockey organization. The team gave a hoodie to one of their hockey players for good luck. That same hoodie would rotate around the locker room which caught the attention of their fans. The purple hoodie just has a picture of actor Kevin Spacey’s head with a galaxy themed background.
Here are some of the details we found by running a search on Sysomos.
Nearly all the activity surrounding #SpaceyInSpace was on Twitter and it was mentioned about 3.6k times in the month of January.
Here was the most retweeted tweet from last month involving the hashtag:
A career high 9-game winning streak earns Luongo the #SpaceyInSpace! pic.twitter.com/psjNRrqJVh
— Florida Panthers (@FlaPanthers) January 8, 2016
Goaltender Roberto Luongo received the hoodie for a Panthers winning streak.
Most of the words in the cloud revolve around the hoodie in some way. Notice the words used include Kevin Spacey, Luongo, streak, winning, panthers, NHL, and NHL on NBC Sports. This was mostly from people tweeting about the hockey broadcasts during Luongo’s 9 game win streak. A lot of the activity was created during a game on NBC Sports.
The buzz graph is fairly small because of the limited audience (which can be seen in the geography section below.) The words Florida, Panthers, hoodie and sweatshirt all come from coverage of the team using the hoodie for good luck. The reason words like sale, sold, stadium and game are included is because the team decided to make these hoodies available to the public at the arena. Fans can now buy an item that started off as a joke or fun idea. The words streak, career, high, and 9th revolve around Roberto Luongo’s winning streak in January.
All of the buzz occurred in North America specifically in the US and Canada because those people would be watching the NHL broadcasts and seeing these items on Twitter. It would make the most sense to Americans and Canadians who were watching the Florida Panthers play.
