Sad Otto: Viral Content Challenge

We all can relate to feeling sad after our favorite sports team loses. That was the inspiration behind the Sad Otto, who couldn’t handle the heartbreaking Final Four loss and then the National Championship loss.

Sad Otto

The original tweet also focused on talking about the weather.

My objective for this image was the following:

  • Collect engagement on a single Twitter webcard that drives Twitter users to the IMGUR image
  • Promote overall school spirit in the wake of the Final Four games

Analyzing the results of the Viral Content, it was too timely of an image. In hindsight, I would have done something less reliant on the recent loss. I think there would have been even more engagement on Twitter itself. Once I added the “Cuse” hashtag and “college basketball” to Imgur, I started receiving many more views, a total of 508, which I was surprised by. I also received two negative comments and two favorites.

On the promoted Twitter Webcard, I spent $4.00 over the span of seven days. In total, I received 75 engagements. I specified the webcard to appear to the Syracuse, NY area. I think this may be why I received so many impressions. Via Twitter I did not receive any negative feedback.

In the end, I think it was successful. Yet, looking back I would have launched the campaign the day following the Men’s Final Four loss, rather than waiting until three days after. The content was too timely and would have fared better in that environment directly following the game.

  1. Who are the people who had negative comments on this? I thought strategically you nailed the meme and were able to take a little advantage of the Final Four loss to get the engagement/views/impressions that were potentially possible. For that great job. Also nice job switching it up with the tags and getting even more looks at the tweet because now I personally know when I write out a tweet with a similar objective to do some of the similar things you did.
