My Talents, In Ten Tweets

After a semester spent in #NHsmc, not only has my knowledge base of Twitter and social media as a whole grown, but my following has grown as well. I started the semester with 14 Twitter followers. Now, 15 some odd weeks later I have 66 Twitter followers – that’s roughly a 288% increase. With this increase in followers, naturally my Klout score has increased as well. This number has soared from 14 to 61, a 335% increase. I am looking forward to taking all of the skills and knowledge I have learned and hopefully transferring them into my future job and career.

My Top Ten Tweets

  1. This tweet was created at the beginning of  viewing party for NBC’s new hit show This Is Us to fulfill an assignment of taking a group selfieI took my selfie, despite my at-first resistant friends, and uploaded it into Twitter while applying a Twitter filter and stickers to it as well, just to add a little spice. When crafting my copy, I tweeted directly to NBC and used #ThisIsUS, before realizing that This Is Us actually had their own account. Shortly after, I was pleasantly surprised to see the verified This Is Us account tweeting my picture out and replying to my message! This tweet received 846 impressions and 345 engagements, with an engagement rate of 40.8%.

2. My favorite show and go-to Netflix re-run is Gossip Girl. I curated a Twitter list for a class assignment that included all of the verified show actor accounts as well as the overarching Gossip Girl account itself, in case fans like me were feeling nostalgic. When promoting the Twitter list, I mentioned the Gossip Girl account in addition to adding the traditional and Gossip Girl native speaking hashtag of “XOXO”. Additionally, I attached a GIF to attract viewer attention and specifically chose Blake Lively as she plays Serena, one of the main characters, in the hit show. This tweet received 263 impressions and 21 engagements, with an engagement rate of 8%.

3. When reflecting back on this past summer, there was not one image that I felt represented it best. When completing an assignment of creating an image collage, I felt these four images represented my summer spent in New York City perfectly. While I spent Monday-Friday interning in the Information Technology department of A+E Networks, many things happened outside of those walls. The tweet I created along with this collage of images highlighted the wide spectrum of events during my day. This tweet received 190 impressions and 15 engagements, with an engagement rate of 7.9%.

4. This tweet is a Twitter web card that was created for my class viral content challenge assignment. The web card includes a self made meme and link to view it larger on the platform Imgur. The text of the tweet is meant to intrigue an audience with the hopes of my meme going viral on the web. In addition to the play on words I used, I also included an emoji because who doesn’t love emojis? The hashtag “#StoryFury” included was created to represent my entire viral content campaign. This card was later promoted using Twitter Ads to increase engagement. Looking at the organic metrics first, this tweet received 1,811 impressions and 102 engagements with an engagement rate of 5.6%. The metrics incorporating the card promotion from Twitter Ads included 1,812 impressions and 104 engagements, with an engagement rate of 5.7%.

5. Many memories and time spent in high school was traced back to my varsity cheerleading squad that I was a member of for four years and eight total seasons. This tweet outlines my feelings toward my past experience and was created for an assignment that prompted me to share something positive about myself. I attached an image to this tweet of my entire team performing during halftime of a football game. I liked this image because it shows people the end product of all of the hard work that we performed day in and day out. This tweet received 202 impressions and 11 engagements, with an engagement rate of 5.4%.

6. Aside from creating this Twitter poll for a class assignment, I was sitting in the library as I do many mornings and could not make a decision on what I wanted to drink: coffee or tea. I thought this was the perfect opportunity to not only fulfill my weekly Twitter assignment but also have someone else make that insignificant but somewhat difficult decision for me. I created the poll on Twitter and then tweeted it out. Needless to say, I drank coffee that morning. This tweet received 75 impressions and 3 engagements, with an engagement rate of 4%.

7. My all-time favorite food is ice cream. When paying my somewhat consistent weekly visit to my favorite Syracuse ice cream shop, I decided to complete my assignment of creating an original GIF around it. Using the app Gif Boom, I filmed my ice cream being topped with nothing other than rainbow sprinkles. After completing the GIF filming and production, I saved it and uploaded it to Twitter. When crafting the tweet, I decided to personify the ice cream and give it a friend: the sprinkles. This tweet received 184 impressions and 7 engagements, with an engagement rate of 3.8%.

8. When looking through my Twitter media tab, two images stuck out to me that were related to technology that I utilize every day. I thought that using technology based images was the most appropriate way to complete the assignment of promoting my Twitter media tab. One image is a screenshot of the new iOS feature of physically hand writing a text or iMessage to a recipient. The second image is of my personal character used on the widely popular app and keyboard attachment Bitmoji. In addition to attaching both of these images to my tweet, I mentioned Apple and Bitmoji’s Twitter accounts prior to posting my Twitter media tab link. This tweet received 137 impressions and 5 engagements, with an engagement rate of 3.6%.

9. Rock the Dome is an annual concert sponsored by the Syracuse University student organization University Union (UU). When prompted for an assignment to draw in the Syracuse University community using local hashtags, I knew #rockthedome was the perfect option. This year UU brought the band 1975 to perform, which provided for a wildly successful concert night. I took an iPhone image of me purchasing my ticket and attached it to a tweet that included useful information about ticket purchase, as well as mentioning the band itself and Syracuse University’s twitter accounts. This tweet received 144 impressions and 5 engagements, with an engagement rate of 3.5%.

10. In case you missed it, also known as #ICYMI globally in the Twitter world can be used for any topic out there. When assigned to use this hashtag for recycling old or outdated content, I chose to relate it to the highly debated topic, at the time, of which companies were in the running for the purchase of Twitter. I started the tweet off with the infamous hashtag and also included mentions of both Disney, who had been a contender in the purchasing race, as well as Twitter itself. I included a GIF of the dog from Up!, a widely popular Disney movie. I thought it was a nice touch for the audience that the GIF and copy went hand in hand. This tweet received 142 impressions and 3 engagements, with an engagement rate of 2.1%.

While we live in a world where numbers are present and everywhere we turn, Twitter metrics are not the single most important factor in deciding the quality of tweets, something I have learned throughout this semester. Text, hashtags, mentions, memes, images, GIFs are only a few of the add-ons that can make or break any given tweet.
