My Twitter Journey

Throughout the course of this class, I have loved watching how my Twitter presence has changed. I began the semester with 466 followers and have finished the semester with 503. Through this growth of 8% (37 followers), I have realized a drastic difference in the type of follower I now attract. Of these 37 followers include advertisement specialists, individuals with over 100k followers, several companies, and even Young and Rubicam Advertising Agency, an agency that is extremely high on my job search list (as I am an Advertising major).

Never would this have happened had it not been for this class. Never would this have happened had I not started tweeting like a professional. By using call to action tags, mentioning handles, inputting additional tags in ordinary tweets, joining twitter conversations, quote tweeting, and referencing worldly topics/trends, I was able to pull in this new demographic and ultimately bring them along for my journey.

Though I did attract some followers that correlated with my old Twitter persona (memes, casual tweets, etc.), the dominant new followers are the professional, newsworthy, skillful Twitter players that now know who I am.

I am so thankful for this class having changed my perception of Twitter. Now I can be taken seriously in this social media medium, as has already been proven throughout this new demographic that now follows my account.

1.

Impressions: 5,875
Engagements: 315 (fitting since it’s a SU tweet and that’s the area code!!)
Summary: I believe the success of this post was dominantly from the links presented within the tweet. Not only did I tag the university, I also included  . Because of these, @SyracuseU retweeted me, thus escalating the success of the tweet by tenfold. Additionally, by using media within the tweet (the picture), it grabs the viewers’ attention in an otherwise monotonous feed.

2.

Impressions: 1,122
Engagements: 98
Summary: For this tweet, the success primarily stemmed from the #socialmedia tag I included, as well as the use of dynamic media. Both of these pulled viewers in (whether it was pulling them from their feed or pulling them through a #socialmedia search), leading to the large amount of engagement the tweet received.

3.

Impressions: 520
Engagements: 87
Summary: This tweet was interesting to me because it was a reposting of the previous tweet spoken of. We were assigned to repost a previous tweet, this time using different strategy (i.e. tags, mentions, emojis, etc.). I decided to change the initial tweet slightly to this time incorporate  . The tweet did not have the same engagement count as its original, but for a repost, I found this to be quite successful.

4.

Impressions: 913
Engagements: 252
Summary: This tweet was perhaps my favorite one to generate. I thought it was SO COOL that we learned how to make gifs of ourselves, and I thought it was even cooler that I got so much feedback from it! With 252 total engagements, I was absolutely shocked. Perhaps this was because my followers thought it was just as cool as I thought to have my face in a gif, or perhaps it was the meme-lingo I incorporated with the tweet. Either way, this was one of my most successful tweets!

5.

Impressions: 784
Engagements: 216
Summary: I believe this tweet had such high statistics for the same reason my gif tweet did. My followers are not used to seeing my physical self on my Twitter, so I think that when they did see me appear via Twitter Video, they wanted to click to see more. Additionally, by using an exciting new feature such as periscope, it sparks interest and curiosity in the viewers, causing them by nature to want to explore. I was sure to include #TwitterVideo and casual lingo to accompany this tweet, thus increasing the viewer’s desire to read/engage with the tweet.

6.

Impressions: 2,041
Engagements: 115
Summary: This tweet was particularly the most interesting to me. This was my promoted meme tweet from the viral meme challenge. Of the impressions, 608 were organic while 1,433 were “bought”. Similarly, of the engagements, detail expands were mostly organic, but actual engagements were dominantly from the promoting. This post fell very short of my expectations. I was shocked to see the lack of engagement from my followers. However, this proved to me that my followers are mostly millennials (as stated in my analytics anyway) that act true to millennial behavior. They value convenience and quality over everything else. When the extra step of clicking to an external website was involved, it became too much work for them, thus limiting the engagements received.

7.

Impressions: 765
Engagements: 150
Summary: Yay! I did NOT expect this tweet to receive any attention, really. I posted it in passing, not thinking anything of it. But after receiving 19 likes (or “pats on the back” in this context (imo)) my heart was truly warmed. I believe the success of this came from the gif used and the topic being discussed. As mentioned above, most of my followers are fellow millennials. We’re all going through this sheltered world to real world transition, encouraging and pushing each other to do well whenever we can. Since I mentioned I was proud of this card I accomplished, I feel that they engaged in order to virtually say “Good job”.

8.

Impressions: 471
Engagements: 12
Summary: Oh, election time. This tweet was a Quote Tweet of CNN’s publication of Van Jones’s eloquently spoken reaction to the election just after the results became evident. By using the tag #ICYMI it pulled visitors of that tag into my tweet. By quoting a relevant topic from a reliable source, it also increased engagement of the tweet. Lastly, by the tweet pertaining to a topic I am extremely passionate about, I feel that my followers were more apt to explore, especially since many of them share the same views.

9.

Impressions: 538
Engagements: 12
Summary: This tweet was another exciting one, as it received a retweet from the SU Abroad Twitter account! By tweeting mentioning both @SyracuseU and @SyracuseAbroad, it increased the viewership and scope at which it reached. Additionally, by @SyracuseAbroad retweeting it, the tweet then ventured out to all of their followers, as well, creating widespread impressions.

10.

Impressions: 445
Engagements: 9
Summary: This was a cool experience for me. Upon tweeting to @teenybiscuit to thank her for speaking to our class, she replied to me, causing my tweet to be broadcasted to her followers in a “piggyback” manner on their feeds. This is the reason this tweet has so many impressions, though little engagements. By including the #socialmedia tag, it pulled in additional viewers. Also, by using an emoji, it caused the tweet to stand out a little more than usual on the Twitter feed.
