Facebook: Friend or Foe?

I think that Facebook has changed exponentially over the few years. When I joined Facebook, it was the one-stop-shop for instant messaging, status updates, pictures, and funny videos to past the time. Poking people on Facebook was a competition and everyone cared about who you were being poked by.

Facebook began its downfall when apps launched that focused in on elements that Facebook grazed over such as Twitter with daily updates. Eventually, my generation became less excited about the website so, when the site crashed very few people cared.

I have very little friends that use Facebook to share what goes on throughout their days. Instead, the only time I see an updated status is when someone has accomplished something major within their lives this may include getting a new job, getting into graduate school or moving to a new place. Similarly, everyone used to update their profiles with pictures consistently. It was a fun way to pass the time looking through someone’s updated pictures to see what they have been up too. Today, my friends on Facebook are  unconcerned with updating their profiles and I am rarely on Facebook to see if someone uploaded pictures. I go on Facebook to watch videos that are visually appealing and that entertain me. This may include cooking recipes, funny videos and informational videos.

If I could give advice about how to make Facebook better I would capitalize on the video element that makes Facebook fun now. I can always go on Facebook and find something informational or entertaining so maybe it could include highlights of the best videos of the day. It could also use Instagram’s technique of giving you content that is preferred based on your browsing history. For example, Facebook could allow you to have favorite profiles of your best friends and their content would show up first whenever they posted. It could also add a feature where you could mark a post as read next to the Like Button that is on Facebook. Also, it should find ways to make the website more personal to the user as the article “5 Features That Would Make Facebook So Much Better” describes.

    I totally agree! I think Facebook really needs to continue to focus in on the video aspect. Personally, my favorite thing about Facebook now is to see all the cool, interesting, funny videos out there, along with seeing pictures of family and friends. That is definitely the direction it should propel into! Great post!

  2. I couldn’t agree more that Facebook should use an algorithm that tailors content to the user’s browsing history. Ever since Facebook became much less popular than other social media platforms, my news feed has become filled with things I don’t really care about, when really, I could at least be catching up on new movies or news on topics that actually interest me.
