BuzzFeed’s Twitter Account CrowdTangle

The outlet we chose for our CrowdTangle search was BuzzFeed’s Twitter account. We decided to use this outlet because it is the number one digital publisher, focused on news and entertainment, and possesses high user engagement. Thus, we thought it would be insightful to view what type of content and themes receive the most interactions. We found the trending topic by using CrowdTangle to look for a post on BuzzFeed’s Twitter that had the highest engagement during the timeline 10/10/18 -10/17/18.

The tweet that had the most interaction within that timeline was a BuzzFeed quiz topic incorporating the Bangtan Boys.

To see why this post had such high engagement on such a popular platform such as BuzzFeed, we went to Twitter to find out more about this boy band. At first, we simply searched BTS, which stands for Bangtan Boys, and that led us to a tweet discussing how amazing the new song was, which then allowed us to realize what the hype around this topic was. We learned more about this new song and discovered that the name of it was “Waste It on Me”. This led us to our overall Boolean search which enabled us to focus our search and discover the engagement behind it. Using Advanced Twitter Search, we searched (BTS OR “Bangtan Boys” OR #BTS OR #WASTEITONME). This allowed us to receive a wide range of tweets, to gain greater insights, but tweets which all pertained to the Bangtan Boys in someway. To determine the engagement, we used the criteria of at least 500 retweets and 2,000 likes in TweetDeck.

CrowdTangle and TweetDeck both led us to our overall focus on the trending topic of the release of Bangtan Boy’s first English song. We found that the high interactions on BuzzFeed’s tweet stemmed from the anticipation of this band’s upcoming release, while the additional tweets that had great user engagement were hyping up the excitement of this new song.
