As of late the National Anthem has sparked controversy and has become one of the most polarizing issues in America.
While many believe kneeling during the anthem before a sporting event is disrespectful to the flag and the country, others believe it is their constitutional right to be able to protest injustices in society. The #TakeAKnee movement started when Collin Kaepernick (an NFL player) decided to kneel during the National Anthem in order to bring awareness to racial injustices and police brutality which disproportionally targets African Americans. In recent weeks the controversy has received significantly more media attention since President Trump gave his stance. The President believes taking a knee is disrespectful and has gained more support from his base and has further divided Americans on the issue.
The #TakeAKnee movement has cost the NFL and its players millions of dollars with both sides protesting games and has also cost Collin Kaepernick his career since NFL owners don’t want to associate themselves with the controversy he brings.
Since the protests started, athletes have joined in solidarity to raise awareness for police brutality and now also for sexual abuse. Do you stand for the Anthem or do you #TakeAKnee?
Super interesting topic that will be debated for a long time. Nice job explaining the situation and showing both sides of the argument around the Take a Knee protest!
