Part 1: Influence
Twitter-
Start Followers: 222/End Followers: 247
Percent Gain: 11.26%
Analysis: By utilizing the class hashtag (#Nhsmc) and the various twitter strategies, discussed below, I was able to reach a new audience on the twitter platform. These strategies allowed for my tweets to reach more newsfeed than ever before, and due to this I was able to see an increase of engagement on my posts as well an increase of followers towards my page. Utilizing our class hashtag allowed for me to gain new followers from our course as well as past alumni who still follow the page. Along with that, the strategies we learned in class, and executed at home, gave my page more depth as well as quality posts which seemed to connect more with users I did not know yet would come across my specified tweets or even my newsfeed.
Klout-
Start Klout: 22/End Klout: 23
Analysis: Throughout the class, my Klout score has risen and fallen as my social media use has fluctuated. As I saw a decrease in my Klout from the beginning of the course until the end, I nearly stayed the same throughout the 4 months. My 90 day high sits right above 25 and the reason for that slight uptick was my Twitter moment post; utilizing a large UFC event held the previous weekend. Using content from the sports top journalists allowed for my post to receive 366 impressions, 36 clicks, and an engagement rate of nearly 12%. Other strategies that also allowed for an increase in my influence were my quote tweets, creation of a new hashtag, and cross promotion of my other platforms.
Part 2 : Execution
10. #IRL Social Media Post
Networking before LinkedIn was there to hide everyone behind a mobile device or computer screen #NHsmc #IRLsocial @jmgrygiel pic.twitter.com/FrltkiSE4l
— Ethan Strauss (@EthanStrauss) January 24, 2018
Analysis: As this post was published in the very beginning of the class, I feel as if a re-post now would definitely garner more attention than it did at the time. On this tweet, I received 1 retweet, 1 comment, as well as 5 likes. Through twitter analytics, I am able to understand that the post received 1,452 impressions and 165 engagements resulting in an 11.4% engagement rate. I believe this tweet was able to have as much success as it did, due to the trendiness of the hashtag used. The effective hashtag coupled along with the photo (adding media richness) and controversial topic allowed for my audience to react in the way they did. Networking is always a topic on peoples minds, especially as a senior in college looking for an entry level role, and there is no better way to show the issues we have with interpersonal skills than through a twitter post exposing this issue.
9. Twitter List #FollowFriday
I may have missed #FollowFriday but if the world of MMA is of any interest to you, follow @arielhelwani @sherdogdotcom @MMAFighting to stay up to date!
Take a look at my curated page of their tweets via https://t.co/OpqS7B540E#NHSMC
— Ethan Strauss (@EthanStrauss) February 19, 2018
Analysis: This post was able to use two strategies we used in class to connect with a wide ranging audience. By curating a list, which included MMA journalists; Ariel Helwani (Newhouse Alum), Sherdog.com, and MMA fighting, I was able to create a page where the groups tweets were able to stand alone. Included in the post was the #FollowFriday hashtag which promoted their accounts as well as mine. This post was able to garner 3 likes as well as 1 comment. Through twitter analytics, I found that the post received 251 impressions and 23 engagements, therefore resulting in a 9% engagement rate. This tweet was able to attract individuals whom are looking for all things MMA in one location, but I feel as if the link to the ‘Twitter list’ was what led to the success as it received 21 clicks. The ability to create a list for these journalists tweets and have them pushed out using a successful hashtag like #FollowFriday allowed for unprecedented success on the post.
8. Cross Platform Promotion
Follow my @Snapchat (emas1296) if you want to be kept in the dark about my life and every once in a while see the occasional story #NHSMC pic.twitter.com/lbSfALrhlh
— Ethan Strauss (@EthanStrauss) February 19, 2018
Analysis: In this post, I was able to use a tweet to help build my following on Snapchat. By including rich media which imbedded by snap account as well as my username, I was able to cross promote my accounts through different platforms in order to gain a larger following. The utilization of the @Snapchat account seemed as if it led to a more successful post than if I were to not use it. This post was able to garner 4 likes and 1 comment. Along with that, it had 332 impressions and 34 engagements leading to a 10.2% engagement rate. Following those numbers, the post also led to 18 media engagements and 6 profile clicks. Due to these numbers, it seemed as if the post was a success as it resulted in many engagements, views, and clicks; which eventually developed a larger friend list on my Snapchat account.
7. Hashtag Creation (#CrackTheAlgorithm)
I wonder when the public will be able to #CrackTheAlgorithm and actually understand the @Twitter feed #nhsmc
— Ethan Strauss (@EthanStrauss) February 28, 2018
Analysis: The creation of a new hashtag is always something cool as you are the first person to implement it social, but something even cooler is creating one that questions the specific platforms usage. A big question today about the use of social media is the idea of the algorithm, and whether it is Facebook, Instagram, or twitter we are still unsure why certain things appear in certain places of our newsfeeds. Due to this, I created the #CrackTheAlgorithm hashtag, as myself along with many others would truly like to know the reason behind the way things are posted. This post was able to receive 2 comments, 2 retweets, and 2 likes. Through twitter analytics I was able to see that the post had 232 impressions and 7 engagements resulting in a 4% engagement rate. Although this post did not receive as much attention as some before it, I felt as if it had to be in my top 10 as the algorithm is a concept questioned by all social media users on all platforms.
6. Tweet Storm
After a bobble of the football and possession gained with just one foot in… I was unaware that warrants a TD in the #NFL #NHsmc pic.twitter.com/zIsiDhkdJ2
— Ethan Strauss (@EthanStrauss) February 5, 2018
Analysis: As the Super Bowl is worldwide spectacle, it seems as if there are always issues or viral trends that occur following the day of the game. Although this years vitality belonged to the kid during the halftime show, a true sports fan like myself was left the next day questioning the idea of what is a catch and what is not. Due to this, I felt as if it would be a great technique to utilize a published tweet of my own with some rich media posted by others to get my point across. During this offseason the NFL has implemented new regulatory writing into their rule book about the idea of a catch and it results from an abundance of plays during the regular season, postseason, and this play in the Super Bowl. Tagging the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell in this post led to some attraction from the public. This post had 3 retweets and 2 likes. Furthermore, the post had 380 impressions and 20 engagements leading to a 19% engagement rate. By using my own opinion and a picture posted by a professional photographer, I was able to get my point across to the public; that the NFL has some issue on their hands and it is necessary for them to enhance the rules to prevent issues like this in the future.
5. #ICYMI
#ICYMI even though i don’t think it’s possible… #GoldMedal #X3 #NHsmc https://t.co/iYmsphCZiF
— Ethan Strauss (@EthanStrauss) February 14, 2018
Analysis: After a worldwide event like the olympics, there are few people that miss the must see events, but for the few that do the #ICYMI (In case you missed it) hashtag is all they need to see. A few days after Shaun White made history with his 3rd gold medal at the Olympics, I felt as if it were the proper time to alert anyone in the public who may missed it. By utilizing the #ICYMI hashtag as well as a few others I pushed the information out to the public. The post received 3 likes and 1 retweet. It also received 392 impressions and 11 engagements resulting in a 2.8% engagement rate. Although this post lacked the attention that others did, the post was published relatively towards the beginning of the class. I also feel as if the post fit the hashtag extremely well as the Flying Tomato winning a gold medal is world news and anyone who missed it should definitely be made aware.
4. Twitter Collage
More #Controversy for the @ufc and @danawhite after @YoelRomeroMMA misses weight, yet #KO @LukeRockhold, and will still be granted the next #middleweight title shot #nhsmc pic.twitter.com/v00LMwm1PF
— Ethan Strauss (@EthanStrauss) February 11, 2018
Analysis: I know a lot of my posts have to do with the sport of MMA, but it is one of my hobbies and I stay up to date with all things MMA. When assigned to make a collage, I felt as if there was no better time then the days following UFC 221 in Perth, Australia. As Yoel Romero missed weight (as seen on the scale above), Dana White was left puzzled (seen above) on how to go about it. This led to yet again more controversy relating to the UFC. This collage perfectly illustrates the controversy dealt with that day and the controversy that followed within regards to the middleweight division. By utilizing the collage I was able to illustrate the issue that had risen and tag all parties involved, which included; the UFC, Dana White, Yoel Romero, and Luke Rockhold. This post resonated with numerous UFC fans as it got 1 like, 2 retweets, and 2 comments. Furthermore, this post received 430 impressions and 40 engagements leading to a 10% engagement rate. I believe this collage successfully depicted a scenario and was able to tell the story of the UFC 221 controversy through its pictures.
3. GIF Creation
That feeling when you complete the #TidePodChallenge #nhsmc pic.twitter.com/GVZ985v3Jc
— Ethan Strauss (@EthanStrauss) February 7, 2018
Analysis: By utilizing this GIF I created with Imgur, I was able to reach a viral audience at the time when the Tide Pod Challenge was very much still in full force. With new videos daily and each one trying to up the ante, I felt as if it would only be right to create a funny GIF playing off that concept. I used Kevin Hart, multi purpose figure, to portray my message. The post got 2 like and 2 retweets. It also got 373 impressions and 17 engagements resulting in a 5% engagement rate. I believe I was able to find so much success with this post as I played off an already trending topic and created something with originality. Also, using the #TidePodChallenge helped me gain 67 media viewers.
2. Twitter Moment
⚡️ “UCF 217: Turn the belts over! #andNEW #x3 #NHsmc” by @EthanStrausshttps://t.co/V1dnWLnG18
— Ethan Strauss (@EthanStrauss) January 30, 2018
Analysis: In a night where UFC history was made, I felt that a Twitter moment would fit the situation proper. With three title fights and each challenger winning to gain the belt, I created a moment which included either a picture or video of them finishing the fight followed by them receiving the belt from commissioner Dana White. The Twitter moment technique is one that allows for you to reach an audience you haven’t reached before, and it allows you to utilize professional content (photos and videos). This post received 3 likes and 26 link clicks. Along with that, it also received 370 impressions and 33 engagements leading to a 8.9% engagement rate. I believe that I was able to find so much success with this post as the moments technique is one that helps you reach users you would never find through a basic post, but also due to the fact that the moment created was about such a historical night in the UFC landscape.
1. Deep Link Content
With the 2018 #NFLDraft right around the corner, its hard to understand @MelKiperESPN thought process on @josh3rosen no longer being a top 10 pick #TheComeback #34pts #NHSMChttps://t.co/q3shuCk2wB pic.twitter.com/3w2s6qa9Y9
— Ethan Strauss (@EthanStrauss) February 21, 2018
Analysis: With the NFL Draft just a day away I thought it would only be right to bring in this post, which includes a clip of Josh Rosen, as the #1 tweet of the semester. With the inclusion of the deep link to the full youtube video os Rosen’s massive 34 point comeback earlier this year, the post also includes a GIF that plays on the Twitter newsfeed of just a few of the many highlights from the game. I was also able to also tag Rosen in the post as well as ESPN’s Mel Kiper who is their #1 Draft Analyst. This post got 2 likes, 3 comments, and 1 retweet. Along with those analytics, it also received 61 media clicks. Within regards to users, it got 351 impressions and 35 engagements, which led to a 9.7% engagement rate. This tweet was able to garner the success that it did by utilizing a deep link as well as having two active twitter users in Rosen and Kiper being tagged in the post.
Overall: Between all of the content published this semester on my Twitter feed, I was able to see a major increase in interaction with outside users in all my posts. The techniques taught in class and utilized on our feeds were extremely beneficial in helping me gain a larger following as well as pushing out more quality content. Mainly, I realized that inserting media richness, whether photo or video, is always going to enhance any post you push out and allow for a greater reaction from users, whether resulting in more likes, retweets, comments, or even a follow.
