Facebook

Facebook has changed in multiple ways over the years, both in ways that it can control and ways that it couldn’t. One large shift that has happened over the past 4 years is a demographic shift moving towards older people. In its infancy, Facebook (at the time The Facebook) was only for college students. As it gained popularity it became open for younger age groups who flocked to the website. Over the last few years, however, older age groups started joining the site. Thanks to not wanting their mother to comment on every facebook picture “cuuuuute!” (I’m speaking from experience), as well as some other factors the younger generation moved to other platforms like Instagram & Snapchat. What has changed about Facebook that they chose to change was the focus on advertisements. This is exactly why Mark Zuckerberg said that he needed to fix Facebook. Facebook chose to have people see more posts from companies instead of posts from their friends. My advice for fixing Facebook follows the idea that Zuckerberg has. I think that less interaction with companies is absolutely key. I know many people who left Facebook, not because of their mother commenting on their photos, but because of incessant game requests that clogged their notifications and their feeds. I think that having an option to block game notifications would also be key to fixing Facebook. I also had an idea to become more friendly to kids by having an under 18 option where there are automatic language filters and moderators to help reduce the problem of cyberbullying.
