Some think social media are simply annoying posts on Facebook or Twitter, I think of it as a grander platform for connecting individuals and sharing experiences. Social media are able to provide an interconnected network similar to the one depicted in the book, Rewire by Ethan Zuckerman that I touched on here:
Pretty amazing how our interconnectivity led to stopping the outbreak of a major disease in @EthanZ book #Rewire #NHsmc

Except instead of countries, it weaves a web connecting individuals. Social media are extensive and can be a difficult concept to grasp, so I’ll focus on one aspect not usually considered to fit into the category that I predominantly use: music sharing. Sites such as Soundcloud allow users to create profiles filled with original content, make playlists and communicate with other people. There even is a blog portion of the site, for users to share extended thoughts. This online interaction is still a part of social media, simply focused on music. I am able to share music with friends at other colleges and communicate through this online channel in the way most would expect. Allowing users to gain an audience for their art and market themselves is another chief aspect:

Consequentially, it is indicative of the impact that social media have on my relationships with others and how it brings together a diverse group of people all over the world and gives those who typically lack feedback, an audience and network to build upon from shared interests in music.
