How @sydddrod became @sydearodriguez

Part 1: Influence

I have used Twitter since high school for staying updated with news, but I never really tweeted. When I started this class, I decided to keep the Twitter that I had prior to this class. I wanted to keep my network from home and then build on it. I deleted all of my old tweets to start fresh and changed my handle from @sydddrod to @sydearodriguez to make it more professional.

I started with 217 followers and now have 241 followers. This is an 11% increase. I noticed that the tweets with the most engagements led to the highest amount of profile clicks. My tweets with media such as pictures and GIFs typically did better than regular tweets. Looking back, I think I could have engaged with more people on Twitter to try to grow my following. I tagged a lot of brands in my tweets, but did not tweet directly at a lot of people. I think going forward I should try to connect with more personal accounts and not just national brands. I am the marketing director for Syracuse’s Spoon University chapter. I should try to tap into the Spoon University community and make connections at different campuses across the country.

My Klout score went from 44 to 58. This was a 31.8% increase. I think that this shows that the content that I’m posting is getting a pretty good amount of engagement from my followers. I’m trying to find the balance between posting regularly, but not overwhelming my followers. I think if my content is doing well among my followers, I could post a little more frequently. I want to make sure I am not posting on social media just because I can. I want to post things with substance.

Part 2: Execution

I definitely had a few social media “wins” over the semester. Based on engagement, these are my Top 10 Tweets:

My tweet about basketball season starting was by far the best tweet I have had. The official Syracuse Men’s Basketball Twitter account retweeted this so I got a huge amount of engagements on it. It ended up with a total of 651 engagements. I had 85 profile clicks from the tweet and I got 6 new followers from it. This tweet was picked up by @Cuse_MBB because I tagged them in the tweet and I chose to publish it the day of the first game of the season. It was relevant and I think the picture was pretty cool too.

Similar to the basketball tweet, I had two tweets about rowing that got picked up by bigger Twitter accounts.

This tweet was retweeted by @RowOrange, the Syracuse Women’s Rowing Twitter account. They have 1,500 followers so a good amount of people saw this tweet. I had 110 engagements on it, 67 of them being media engagements. This shows how important including some sort of media is for a tweet to succeed.

This was my other rowing related tweet that had a lot of engagement. I reposted a previous tweet from earlier in the year. By tagging @RowOrange, the national account @RowingRelated saw my tweet and posted the picture I included on their Instagram. The picture got over 1,000 likes.

This tweet did not have a lot of likes or retweets, but it still had 65 engagements. I think it was because the picture I included was vertical and not horizontal so in order for people to see the whole picture they had to click on it. The part of the picture that was showing on someone’s timeline must have been eye-catching enough to get people to click on it.

I got 3 new followers after posting this Twitter moment after the election. I am from San Francisco so I have a large Twitter following in California. This was very relevant for many of my followers. I had 67 engagements on this, 52 of them being profile clicks. I think with a lot of the Twitter activity surrounding the election, when people would tweet about politics, people who saw the tweet would then go to their profile to see if they were more Democrat or Republican. I know a few people who lost followers over things they posted about the election on social media. I didn’t lose any followers from this post because my wording was relatively unbiased.

I got 21 votes in the poll that I put out about the In N Out vs. Shake Shack debate. I know people take this super seriously so I figured a lot of people would participate. I think I could have posted it at a more relevant time of day and maybe I would have gotten more votes on it.

Going off of this post, I decided to follow up with a Spoon article that someone wrote ranking all aspects of the Shake Shack and In N Out menu. I thought this would be a good way connect my previous tweets and give people who did participate in the poll something more to read. I had 25 link clicks on this tweet. It’s also great because Spoon University tracks the engagement on articles for the writers to see how their content is doing so I was helping a fellow Spoon member out. In retrospect, I should have tried to tag the author as well to connect with the person and not just the Spoon brand.

Continuing with the food theme, I posted a quick recipe Vine which did well on engagements. It had 74 total engagements on the video. I think the recipe videos perform well on Twitter because they are quick and inspire great food.

The last two posts in my Top 10 tweets that had a lot of engagement both included GIFs. Both of the tweets also were very time relevant for when I posted them.

When I posted this GIF, there was the closest thing Syracuse has seen to a monsoon this year. I remember people walking into their classes being drenched from head to toe (to the point where they looked like they had just taken a shower). Being from California, I have never seen rain that hard in my entire life. I decided it would be funny to post about it. This tweet had a total of 80 engagements.

This was a GIF I made myself of my best friend’s dog. I figured I would get engagements on it because who doesn’t love dogs? I had 91 engagements, 8 of them being likes on my post.

Looking back at my top performing tweets, every single one of them included some sort of media. My tweets that did not include any media did not do nearly as well as the ones that had pictures, videos, links or GIFs. This just shows me that my followers engage with interesting things that catch their eye.

I think a lot of this has to do with my personality and how I portray myself on Twitter. I am not one for quick remarks in real life, I’m usually the one who contributes random facts that I’ve learned about a wide range of things. I’ve realized that my Twitter also reflects my personality. Everything I’ve shared over the semester has been something I thought was interesting or relevant in my life. I think I should continue to roll with that and keep sharing those food videos.
