Social media always presented itself as a question mark to me. I never knew how big the platforms actually were until I moved to States and I have been on Twitter and Facebook for about ten years and until then I thought I could say wherever I wanted and use it as a personal diary. But as Alanis Morissette sings, “you learn.”
Because of my nationality, I used to tweet a lot in Portuguese and now I try to tweet in English as much as possible. To begin this analysis I will demonstrate the analytics of the semester and the analytics of the last 28 days on Twitter.
Let’s begin with August 2017
My top tweet of the month was in Portuguese and I was live-tweeting the last episode of Game of Thrones while using the #GameOfThrones. As you can see I earned over 1.200 impressions just with one tweet.
In September I tweeted a friend complaining about how much I missed him and also posted a little behind the scenes of what happens in a editing suite for my Broadcasting class. This tweets with the pictures of me editing or complaining about editing became a routine. My number of impressions were also higher than they were in August.
My favorite tweet of the year came in late October when I found out through Entertainment Weekly’s Twitter account that the Hallmark Christmas movies would be starting the following weekend. The Hallmark Channel retweeted my tweet and I had a lot of likes. Also, using the class hashtag and a daily trending hashtag earned me another 144 impressions but I’m guessing it’s because of the cute otters.
In November, another tweet using the class hashtag got me a lot of impressions. An earlier tweet explaining a campaign was also posted but this one got the most impressions. Also, this was a part of a class assignment where we promoted some tweets. My impressions numbers were a little down but I managed to gain more followers than on the previous months.
December is only starting but Twitter Analytics is showing me that I have potential to keep growing. This time of year I usually tweet a lot about Christmas. The number one tweet impressions I had so far was about a girl that posted that Brazil should have a Donald Trump as president. Just another case of ignorance some educated Brazilians seem to have. This tweet earned me impressions because a lot of my followers also know this human being and also have her on social media.
Twitter also gave me a general analysis of my last 28 days on the platform.
My profile visits seem to be a little down but the other aspects are growing.
Because I have already shown my top tweets in general and three using the class hashtag, below I will show another collection of tweets with the #NHsmc that didn’t make the top but are still relevant.
“Journalism is not a job. It is a career” – my uber driver when he found out I was a Journalism student. #NHsmc #Newhouse #hireorange pic.twitter.com/JZGowT5qLG
— Lorena D Paixao (@lorespaixao) November 28, 2017
This tweet originated from a very cool and inspiring conversation I had with an Uber driver in NYC and while I was wondering around Newhouse 3 I found this quote and I thought it needed to be spread around. I also shared it on Snapchat hence the location.
A group of brazilian legislators are trying to pass a law that criminalizes abortion. This images are why abortion should be legal. #NHsmc #womensrights https://t.co/JlavDVhQkL
— Lorena D Paixao (@lorespaixao) November 15, 2017
I normally don’t talk about politics or difficult themes like abortion as most people don’t know I am pro-choice and my family is religious. Some things I rather keep out of my social media in order to protect my privacy and my parents’. Although, I decided to tweet about this absurd law that turn women into criminals if they choose to have an abortion. Abortion is not legal in Brazil and women who chose to terminate a pregnancy have to it in illegal clinics which can result many times in death or permanently making a woman infertile. It’s a delicate topic but I had to share it.

This tweet was post our Halloween Candy challenge that was broadcasted live on Periscope. It was one of my favorite classes of the semester and people at CVS looked at me like I was crazy.
PUPPIES IN CLASS!!!!! #NHsmc pic.twitter.com/HPi0d3cJ4k

Another tweet from that day was a picture of our Professor playing with the cutest classmate we ever had.
I was grabbed. I was called a whore after saying “no”. I was harassed and I blamed myself. #metoo
— Lorena D Paixao (@lorespaixao) October 17, 2017
I didn’t use the class hashtag on this tweet for obvious reasons but the hashtag #metoo gave a voice to so many women and it gave me a voice. When I was in this situation I tweeted about it at the time but deleted it because it was something I just couldn’t wrap my head around. I didn’t get any engagements out of this tweet but I know that it was the right thing tweeting this.

My moo business cards were by far the best investment I made this semester, which was also part of a class assignment.

Last but not least, I was able to share a little bit of my home with my classmates.
In conclusion, the use of the hashtags are a must and something I learned that gives me more impressions and the chance to interact more with other people also using the hashtag. It’s all about the networking. Using photos or videos are also useful and I find it to be because people like things they can visualize. I need to work better on tweeting in both languages and look for more things in common with people on my field.
