Followers Day 1: 0
Followers Now: 46
Starting from scratch and building a follower base on Twitter is definitely not easy. Yes, of course I had a Twitter account with hundreds of followers before this class, who didn’t? However, I like to keep my school/work life and personal life separate, so there I was in September, starting again from scratch.
What Didn’t Work
It took me quite some time to gain any followers at all, especially because I only knew one other person in the class. What I expected in terms of follower gain was way off from reality. I thought that in the beginning of class, everyone would follow each other based off of the Google Doc that we put our Twitter handles on. Well, I was clearly wrong. After about a week of no follower gain, I knew I had to do something else to market my account.
So…
What Worked
I then decided to follow multiple people from class on Twitter myself. This resulted in a large follower gain for me (to those who didn’t follow back, I know who you are). Sure, it may have thrown off my following/follower ratio, but at least now people see what I have to say.
I also would hashtag keywords, such as “#socialmedia,” “#Cuse,” “#Repost,” etc.. This drew in the attention of social media professionals, Syracuse fans, and others.
Klout
My Klout score gradually increased throughout the semester as well. On September 8, I had a Klout score of 10, and I now have a score of 24.94. My all time high was on November 25, when it was 26.11. This may be because I was in a picture on Twitter that resulted in 23 retweets and 22 favorites.
While I may not be the most influential person on Twitter (yet), I am proud that I gained a decent amount of followers within in a few months. Now these important followers will always know exactly what I have to say, when I have to say it. I am very happy that I created a professional Twitter account, and will 100% use it in the future.
