While social media has had a huge impact on my personal life and how I communicate with my friends and family, I would say it has had an even larger impact on my professional life and how I’ve positioned my goals and aspirations. As an advertising major, I always knew that social media should be something I’m comfortable and confident navigating. However, as I progressed through my curriculum here at Newhouse, I found myself becoming more and more interested in the power of social media and all of the new ways it was being uniquely utilized to send a creative message.
As a result, I started applying to internships that were focused around both emerging platforms and ones that focused on new ways to use the traditional, well-known applications. I started my professional experience with social media at Cosmopolitan interning with their Snapchat Discover team who focuses on curating popular content from the Cosmo website into a fun and creative editorial format that reached millions of people every day.

Following this experience, I interned for MTV Digital with their Digital Strategy and Fan Engagement team this past summer in New York City. Here, I moved away from emerging platforms like Discover and focused mainly on Twitter and Instagram, two platforms I was already very familiar with. Although I was well-acquainted with these applications, finding new and fun ways to utilize them that would keep viewers engaged was daunting but rewarding. Almost as rewarding as Sophia Bush shouting out a show your team worked on:
In a shit time, I'm thankful for important stories about women. @SweetVicious on MTV is one. BINGE IT. Love it. Keep it up @MTV. We need it!

These two internships, paired with what I’ve learned through my course work at Syracuse, have completely changed the way in which I interact with social media and has a tremendous impact on my life.
