Taylor Swift is under (Earth, Wind &) Fire

The legendary band Earth, Wind & Fire is best know for one of their mega hits, “September,” which was released in late 1978. Recently, country-pop artist Taylor Swift released a cover of the hit exclusively on Spotify. This sparked a huge outrage amongst Twitter users, as her name was trending on Twitter the entire day of the cover’s release. Many people felt that she completely butchered the song and disrespected the legacy associated with it. She slowed the song down from its upbeat tempo and incorporated a, supposedly, inappropriate country style to the R&B classic. Many people, including Earth, Wind & Fire fans were angered by the attempt to cover the legendary single. They felt as if it’s one of those songs that is deemed untouchable by other artists. Some, however, were impressed with the cover and admired its uniqueness while defending Swift. Music fans nonetheless took to Twitter to express their individual sentiments by using the hashtag, “#September”.

  1. Personally, I am not a fan of Taylor’s cover of September. The Earth, Wind & Fire version is too iconic and no other artist can do the song justice.

  2. I think it is always hard when “newer” artists cover classic songs because not only are you working to impress the original audience but you are working to also impress your own. I didn’t even know Taylor Swift covered “September” until reading your post! Although I’m not a huge T-Swift fan, she does produce some good music. I’m going to have to listen at some point today. Nice article with some funny tweets… She sure does have a huge fan following, but also weary of listening because “September” is amazing as it is!
