It should come as no surprise that the 2017 inauguration of President Donald Trump caused mass controversy across the globe. From start to finish Trump’s campaign caused a social media frenzy, and social media activists had a field day on the days leading up to the inauguration. Below you will find an analysis of #inauguration across many widgets that demonstrate how, when, where and why people talked about the inauguration on Twitter.

The Latest Activity map demonstrates that the inauguration was most discussed between January 19 and January 23. The actual inauguration ceremony took place on January 21, so this data suggests that the community had the most to contribute about this topic closest to its actual occurrence.

 

Buzzgraph

The Buzzgraph, which places inauguration at its center, displays the many other words frequently used to accompany the main phrase in tweets. These words include trump, president, federal, and @cnn. Also included in the Buzzgraph are the words attended, million, aclu, and received. Chelsea Handler’s twitter handle is attached to the highlighted word because her tweet, shown below, was the most retweeted tweet related to the key word inauguration.

As displayed in the Sysomos Geography map, the inauguration was a trending topic worldwide. People in places such as South Africa, the UK, and even Kenya were discussing the inauguration via Twitter. The country with the most activity around the inauguration, unsurprisingly, was the United States, which accounted for 55% of the conversation.

The Word cloud, similar to the Buzzgraph, displays words frequently accompanied by the main term inauguration. Other significant words often used to discuss the trending topic were transgender, trump and singer. Different words that were used less frequently as the ones previously mentioned were jackie, rights, evancho, obama, and charges. From this map we learned what people prefer to talk about when they are referring to Trump and the inauguration.

 

By analyzing #inauguration on Twitter we have come to the conclusion that the information regarding the trending topic, such as related words, geography, and audience, is congruent with our previous assumptions about the topic.
