The Republican Party’s tax reform bill has been a subject of attention for the media and on social media for weeks, and the stakes are rising as GOP leaders try to push the bill through the Senate.
Though the fate of the bill is unknown, one thing is for certain: Twitter users have a wide breadth of opinions on whether the Senate should approve the bill.
While many Twitter users expressed a sense of urgency regarding the bill with the hashtag #TaxReform, some used that energy to advocate for its passing, while others pushed against the bill and explained why they think it’s unfair to Americans.
@SenateGOP – This is your job. This is why you're elected.

The @GOP tax plan has ONLY ONE GOAL. To reduce taxes of large corporations, aka donors. All else in it is smoke and mirrors to pretend it does other things. @realDonaldTrump and @FoxNews are their puppets #TaxReform #TaxScam

Others analyzed the principles of the bill and provoked their followers to think further about the tax proposals — either by providing more information about the bill or by sharing news articles and videos about it.
Not all tax cuts mean YOU keep more $$. The tax cut now being pushed by the GOP is a tax cut for the donor class at the expense of the working class. Universal #BasicIncome would be a tax cut for the bottom 80% at the expense of the top 20%. Which #TaxReform sounds better to YOU? pic.twitter.com/UqQwqkYgmq

Some Twitter users directly mentioned their legislators to tell them to support or oppose the bill, demonstrating how social media can generate and foster democratic participation.
Dear @JeffFlake, support #TCJA because it increases middle-class take-home pay by more than $2,500. #TaxReform https://t.co/arVhwSLyBk
