Part 1
At the beginning of this course, I chose to start a new Twitter account. I did this because I wanted to create a professional Twitter account that employers would be impressed with. I grew my following to 27 followers since I started from scratch in September which is a 100% increase. My Klout score grew from 11.21 to 24. This score grew as I uploaded more content and gained more followers. It could only go up as I started from scratch.
Unfortunately, I was disappointed with my ending follower count. I firmly believed that I would significantly increase my follower network through the use of hashtags, strategic posts, and engaging with interesting people. Through evaluation, it appears that I struggled with firmly identifying what my personal brand is. I did not focus on a specific genre of content which I believe hurt me in the end. Because of this, I did not attract a specific group of people to my page. I also believe I did not engage with the right people. I was either tweeting to celebrities that get thousands of tweets a day; or, I was tweeting to people that did not engage with me at all. In the future, I will look for users who have a strong network and are constantly looking to engage with others.
However, I do think that my use of strategic timing was successful. I typically tweeted around 11 am each time. This seems to be a peak time when people are checking their phones because I got a decent amount of engagement from my followers. I also noticed that my posts got a significant amount of engagement when they included some sort of media, especially a humorous gif.
As for my Instagram, I found that I was gaining a lot more followers and getting a lot more engagement. I also started a new Instagram with the hopes of attracting fellow fashion lovers. I started with 0 followers and have gained 64 followers in all. I owe my success to hashtags as I included as many as I could with each of my Instagram posts. Because my Instagram was successful, it has motivated me to keep with it and make it a successful fashion account.
Part 2
My most engaging post was this winter scene that I posted on the first snowfall of the season. I was surprised I got this much engagement when I did not use that many hashtags. After clicking on the winter hashtag, however, I came to the conclusion that I reached a winter sport’s enthusiasts audience. This was a successful use of strategic hashtags.
2. Post #2 – Instagram Post
This post was easily my favorite post that I shared. I loved how the picture came out and I thought it was fun to use the Over app to add text. I once again used strategic hashtags. After this post, I gained 4 followers. This told me that I should keep uploading this type of content.
3. Post #3 – Instagram
This post has really rich media as the colors are vivid and attract the eye easily. I used this post to start my Instagram theme. This theme was created using a specific filter to all my photos. As you can see from the last three posts, I use “#blogger” in each post. This has proven to attract a very large audience.
4. Post #4 – Instagram
My fourth most successful post was built using the Swipeable app. I got 3 comments saying that the shot was awesome. I think in this post I used several hashtags that have large audiences. I do think, however, think some may have been confused on the swipe feature that looked like a boomerang. I know that at first I was confused on the feature so it probably could have confused others too.
5. Post #5 – Twitter
Shoutout to @MOO for helping me #adult in the coolest way possible #Nhsmc pic.twitter.com/UjvkB47ftL
— Erin Gallagher (@erinngallagher6) September 25, 2017
My fifth most successful post came from Twitter. I uploaded my business cards from MOO that came in the mail that day. I tagged MOO in the post and they ended up favoriting it. This tweet earned 10 likes and 446 impressions. It also helped that I had an aesthetically pleasing picture to accompany the tweet’s copy.
6. Post #6 – Twitter
The end of the #semester is approaching and we’re all wondering where that #extracredit is. #collegelife #NHsmchttps://t.co/NI07nDEjD1
— Erin Gallagher (@erinngallagher6) November 7, 2017
This tweet came from my Viral Marketing Challenge. It earned 8 likes, 1 retweet, 1 reply, and 719 impressions. I did something different with this tweet as I did not post it in the afternoon, I posted it later in the day. I think the timing on this post still worked as it gained significant engagement. This was also successful because it was relevant to many college students as the end-of-semester scaries set in.
7. Post #7 – Twitter
Can't wait to study abroad in this amazing city! Thanks @Google Street View for the awesome pic #NHsmc #Florence pic.twitter.com/9rKnulW9WE
— Erin Gallagher (@erinngallagher6) November 13, 2017
I used Google Street View to build my 7th most successful tweet. This rich media attracted engagement, gaining 5 likes, 1 retweet, 1 reply, and 468 impressions. My only regret with this post is that I did not use “#travel”. I believe this would have attracted a large audience. My “#Florence” narrowed the audience significantly.
8. Post #8 – Twitter
Meeting employers at the @NewhouseSU career fair on Friday like #HireMe #NHsmc pic.twitter.com/j9ztBnjZ6u
— Erin Gallagher (@erinngallagher6) September 20, 2017
This tweet got a little less engagement with only 5 likes and 219 impressions. I made this gif using imgflip. The point of this tweet was to be funny but to also reach other Newhouse students and faculty. I used the “#HireMe” to let any potential employers know that I will be at the career fair. The cute dog lightened the mood on the a serious subject.
9. Post #9 – Twitter
I'm not crying, you're crying #NHsmc
⚡️ “Barack Obama surprises Michelle with anniversary message”https://t.co/6o5dVOLLRC— Erin Gallagher (@erinngallagher6) October 4, 2017
This post was a Twitter moment I shared. This gained 4 likes, 1 retweet, and 254 impressions. I used a witty caption that was short and sweet; I didn’t want to take away from the heartwarming article. I do regret not including more hashtags, however, as I could have reached a larger audience.
10. Post #10 – Twitter
This would also be my face if @ESPN ranked a 19 year old above me#NHsmc #NBA https://t.co/7rogaQH5UQ pic.twitter.com/SP7epkMniR
— Erin Gallagher (@erinngallagher6) September 12, 2017
My last post was also a Twitter moment I shared. Though this only got 2 likes and 202 impressions, it gave me the opportunity to engage with one of my classmates that shared the same thing. We ended up following each other and we now like each other’s content. This gave me proof that a small general interest can easily grow your network.
