I Created a Meme and Here’s What Happened

First off, creating a meme is hard. And having a meme go viral is even harder. For the Viral Content Challenge, the definition of “going viral” was 500 views. My objectives for this assignment were to receive at least 500 views of my meme on Imgur and to receive at least 500 impressions on my promoted tweet of my meme. I was able to reach both of these goals.

I first put my meme on Imgur on November 4th. When I looked at it on Imgur the next day, it already had over two-thousand views. I was shocked, to say the least. At the end of the Viral Content Challenge, my meme had 2,282 views. I think my meme initially got so many views because of the tags I used on the photo. I tagged it with “funny,” “memes,” “friends,” and “The Good Place.”

I also set out to promote my meme on Twitter. I tweeted out four different tweets: one with a Twitter Webcard, one was promoted through Twiiter Ads, and the two others just had the link to my meme.

My Twitter Webcard only got 71 impressions and three clicks on the card itself. It was a success in that I now know how to use Twitter Webcards, but I would have loved to get more clicks on the actual Webcard.

For my promoted Tweet, I spent five dollars and selected my target audience as followers of the Syracuse University Twitter account and The Good Place Twitter account. I thought this would be a good audience for my meme because mainly younger people would relate to my meme.

I was able to get 514 impressions from spending the five dollars to promote my tweet, therefore completing my second objective. I think 514 impressions is a good amount for the five dollars I paid.

Several things worked well in my campaign. I was able to get over 500 views on my meme, completing my first objective. I successfully tweeted out the link to my meme, thus increasing the views on my meme. I was able to successfully use twitter ads to promote one of my tweets. Also, since the photo from my meme is from the TV show The Good Place, I mentioned their Twitter handle in two of my tweets. I think that increased views on my meme as well.

Other things didn’t work so well. The views on my meme in Imgur did not increase by much after promoting my meme on Twitter. The views on my meme only increased about 50-100 after promoting it on Twitter. Another downfall is that my meme may not have been the strongest, or it only appealed to a specific audience. Younger people and fans of The Good Place would best relate to this meme. Also, if I had more followers on Twitter, my tweets might have gotten more impressions and my meme might have gotten more views.

The overall campaign was a success because I exceeded both of my objectives. If I could do this assignment again, I would narrow the target audience to just The Good Place fans. I would also try to create a better, funnier meme. Overall, this was a great experience and I have further improved my social media skills.
