Puppy Bowl XIV: The Real Championship on February

With the team spirit during the Super Bowl on February, it’s easy to forget the little guy. The annual #PuppyBowl on Animal Planet was also held on February 4th, and had a presence on Twitter.

Twitter conversations peaked on game day, February 4th. Before game day, users were getting each other excited by making playlists for viewers at home. After game day, users posted jokes about “controversial plays”, and how the result of the game was better than the Super Bowl.

The most retweeted tweet was by Thoughts of Dog,  a popular and funny account that publishes tweets in a dog’s voice. It is a “spin-off” account made by the user WeRateDogs. Thoughts of Dog has 898,394 followers.

A huge majority of the tweets about Puppy Bowl XIV were published in the United States (85.8%). This is expected as the Super Bowl is an American football championship. Canadian users published 4.3% of tweets, which is very small in comparison, followed by the United Kingdom, where 2.3% of tweets were published.

The most popular words and phrases used in Tweets were “puppy”, “bowl” and “puppy bowl”. “Super” and “super bowl” were also popular phrases because it happened on the same day. “Animal Planet” and “rescued” are two interesting findings in the World Cloud. Puppy Bowl XIV was held on the Animal Planet channel. All the puppies in the event were rescues, and within months after the event, most of the puppies were adopted.

The keywords “puppy” and “bowl” appeared together most frequently in tweets, which means that the name Puppy Bowl was the most found in tweets. The phrases “bowl xiv” and “xiv” have weaker association to the word “puppy”, which shows that many users do not follow the event regularly and are just casually mentioning it.
