Social media is the thing that your parents warned would prevent you from getting into college and the thing job recruiters say will make or break your shot at their company – so it’s understandable I’d be a little wary of it. This class opened my eyes to the proper tools and usage of social media platforms, specifically Twitter.
When I began this class I had a total of 292, not too shabby for someone who used to use Twitter to retweet current events and occasionally gush about the British Royal Family. Since January my Twitter followers have increased by a total of 27 (if you aren’t great at math like myself that’s a total of 319) and percent gain of 9%.
My Twitter followers weren’t the only thing to grow this semester – with it my Klout score also increased from 31 to 43 meaning I became that much more influential over the course of this semester. My Klout score really started to peak when I learned what tools worked best to garner attention from my followers – what made them engage with my content.
So what propelled 27 people to follow me? Truly I couldn’t tell you but maybe it has something to do with my top ten tweets.

1. Shocker, this tweet is about the Royals. This tweet had a total of 2,795 organic (no I didn’t promote this tweet I swear) impressions. This tweet utilized techniques we had learned over the course of the semester – using multiple hashtags that were relevant to a topic that garnered worldwide attention. With 56 engagements and an engagement rate of 2%, this is by no way my most engaging tweet but it is the most organic impressions (and impressions period) I’ve ever received on a tweet.

2. Thank God this tweet was successful in producing impressions – I spent $5 on it! This tweet was my promoted tweet for the viral content campaign. This tweet utilized rich media (hello funny meme), hashtags and was strategically timed. This tweet had a total of 2,168 organic impressions and 1,739 impressions post promotion.

3. Puppyscope was popular. Bringing in live video, puppies and engagement from group members made this tweet a success. With 900 impressions, 67 engagements and over 300 viewers on Periscope this cute little puppy was a hit on the internet.

4. You know what the internet loves? Celebs doing things that are relatable. It came as no surprise when Jennifer Lawerence helped me get 775 impressions and 58 engagements. Utilizing rich media, threading tweets (gotta love a good GIF of JLaw climbing over chairs without spilling any wine), relevant hashtags and making sure to tweet when this was still relevant contributed to this tweet being a success.

5. It has become evident that rich media is really what gets my followers going. Just days before Syracuse University had their first snow days in decades I tweeted at the University with a video and asking if the words snow day were in their vocabulary. This tweet garnered me 622 impressions, 32 engagements and an engagement rate of 5%. This was also around the time my followership began to grow.

6. You know what’s fun? WebMDing your cold symptoms – just kidding it’s never a good idea BUT it does make for great content and lucky for me my followers thought so too. With 492 impressions and 20 engagements, this tweet that involved no rich media did surprisingly well. The technique I did deploy to make this tweet a success was copying a famous person’s voice – thanks, Ryan Reynolds!

7. Truth be told I had no clue what #ICYMI (in case you missed it) until I was told in class – I know I am a HORRIBLE millennial. Lucky for me my followers seem to know what #ICYMI means. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are Twitter gold – every time Kensington Palace tweets details about their wedding Twitter explodes. With 453 impressions and 9 engagements, I utilized tagging, quote retweeting, trending hashtags, rich media, and the #ICYMI hashtag – clearly it worked.

8. The first day of class we were asked to virtually introduce ourselves. Back then I knew limited social media techniques, had no idea what made a successful or viral tweet and was pretty clueless. Somehow this introduction tweet still managed to help me get 451 impressions and 21 engagements. Honestly, I wish I could tell you there was technique behind the tweet – but truly there wasn’t.

9. Buzzfeed quizzes are college kids kryptonite – we automatically stop whatever we are doing and take a quiz just to see what Sex and the City character we align with most. It didn’t surprise me when I tweeted at Serena Sarch (a NHsmc Buzzfeed alum) to find me a killer Buzzfeed quiz creator that my impressions were 449 and that my engagements were 22. This targeted tweet at not only Serena but also the general college student population made this tweet a success.

10. To round out the top 10 rich media again proves that content is key. This was back when I knew little about social media techniques but was starting to figure out that social media is just a reflection of things we use IRL. With 398 impressions and 52 engagements, this tweet gave me insight into my followers and what they liked. As shown by the top ten tweets of the semester it was clear that my followers liked rich media and this was a practice that I would use throughout the course of the semester.
