My #NHsmc Personal Influence Growth & Analysis

PART ONE: I began this semester with zero followers and having never had a Twitter account of my own. I had a social media internship the past two summers, running Madison Square Garden’s social accounts, and was very familiar with how Twitter worked, but really had no idea how to create a Twitter presence. Thanks to #NHsmc, I learned the ins and outs of Twitter and how to build buzz around tweets online. Throughout the semester, I gained 70 total followers, composed 105 tweets, created 2 lists, 1 moments post, and liked 557 tweets.

I somehow began the class with a Klout score of 45 and ended with a score of 33. Honestly, I would’ve expected that the initial score would’ve been lower as compared to the later, since I tweeted multiple times a week throughout the past 12 weeks.

Overall, I found that utilizing rich media made my twitter engagement rise. People engaged more with tweets that had links, photos, and video content alongside the text.

PART TWO: I actually found that a lot of my top Tweets, didn’t use the #NHsmc hashtag. I composed many tweets after each music industry speaker that came to speak in my Tuesday night Soyars class. Many times, the speakers would actually re-tweet these posts and engage with me through them. I am realizing that including the class hashtag in these posts would’ve been a great way to boost my engagement and overall Twitter presence and Klout score.

My top ten #NHsmc tweets are as follows…

My top tweet had to do with Prof. Grygiel’s visit to CBSN Live. It was posted during our class period and gained 945 impressions and had 49 engagements. I am curious if this has to do with the fact that people in our class were engaging with it, or that it was posted in the middle of the day when people are browsing the web. Prof. Grygiel actually retweeted it as well, which might have had an impact on the overall engagement.

Strangely enough, my second top tweet also had to do with the Cambridge Analytica data scandal. It gained 760 impressions and had 11 engagements. There is a big gap between engagements in my top two tweets.

When analyzing my top 10 tweets, I began to notice some patters.

A handful of my top tweets had to do with music. My tweet about the Arctic Monkeys gained 90 impressions and had 2 engagements, while my tweet about Rihanna’s birthday gained 243 impressions and 12 engagements. I follow a ton of music industry accounts, and many of my followers care about music as well. This might be why tweets about the industry did very well on my page.

Food performed well on my page too! Both tweets of my meme gained many impressions, however not many retweets or likes. My ‘Ode to Pizza’ tweet performed well, as well. This tweet was full of beautiful pizza photos that I have taken over the past year. This post gained 128 impressions and 15 engagements. It also received four likes!

In addition to food and music, tweets about pop culture and current events were among my top 10 tweets too. People interacted with my poll, as it received 8 votes, and 133 impressions. My Google Analytics media tweet about the Oscars received four likes and 92 impressions. This Oscars tweet was timely, as it was posted right before Oscar Sunday.

Finally, self promotion on my account was a success. I believe this is because my followers care about my personal life and interests. They were probably interested in seeing this screenshot of my Instagram page that I shared out on Twitter. I received 100 impressions and got 4 likes on this tweet.

Overall, I really enjoyed this #NHsmc Twitter assignment. It taught me how to keep up a Twitter account and forced me to stay informed on the app. Through this class, Twitter has actually become my main way to find out news and stay updated!
