My objective for this project was to just hit at least 100 views on my meme. I was expecting it to be difficult to draw a large number of views to Imgur because it was a platform I wasn’t familiar with and had never used before.
What I realized throughout this project is that memes are a way for people to feel connected to each other and during quarantine, memes have been a source of comfort and humor through an intense and serious time. We are all in the same boat and knowing that there are other people living the same realities can put us at ease. I noticed that after putting in place the plan I had written out in the beginning of this project, the most successful was Facebook. I found that people are more inclined to click links that take you out of Facebook than on Twitter. I also have a larger base of people or friends on Facebook than twitter so it is easier to get the link in front of more eyes. It was also easy to get it to my friends by posting it in specific groups on Facebook as well. Something else the worked really well was posting the link in a Reddit meme thread. Reddit is a very engaged community and the users pay close attention to threads they are interested in so I knew this would be the perfect place to post and I think I gained a lot of views from this.
The strategy I don’t think worked the best was both the meme to my Instagram story and then have the link in my bio. Instagram does not really encourage users to leave their platform therefore it is hard for an unverified user to use links on Instagram. The only thing I could do was hope people would go to my page and take the time to click on the link, which I don’t think they did. I learned a lot about what platforms to use for which types of audience and how to utilize the audience you already have as well as what strategies to use to engage new people.
