I feel that the most obvious reason that people use social media is to keep in touch with friends, family, and current events. I definitely use social media to connect with others and moreover so that I feel involved in the world around me. Also, I use social media so that I know what topics people will be talking about on a daily basis. Most of the time others will read about the same trending topics and then we can have informed discussions about them. For example, people have recently been sharing various articles about Hilary Clinton’s early departure from the 9/11 memorial. As this article gets more shares, more people talk about it, and people feel they are staying involved. Posting on social media and connecting with one another also allows us to create a larger community than the one that we interact in face to face.
The support that we show for each other online is especially important on days like 9/11.
