Is this thing on?

I was very skeptical when I first joined social media. With hundreds of different outlets, not only was I overwhelmed, but I struggled to see the appeal; in my mind, they all did the same thing. But I couldn’t be more wrong. The more I learned about the proper Instagram filters and what constituted a “successful” Facebook post, the more I loved it. I can honestly stand before you today and say I’m 110% a social media junkie. So you know that girl who likes your photos within seconds? Yeah that’s me. Social media has given me the outlet to be myself, to let my goofy personality shine. I’ve been raised on AP style, so social media allows me to embrace my creativity and push my boundaries.

Being able to combine my passions for writing with social media has changed my perception about the future of my career. If I had a dollar for every time someone told me journalism was a dying field, I could probably buy my own newspaper. News doesn’t have to come from a tragedy or natural disaster and social media has shown me that inspiration can strike at anytime.

I also feel more connected than ever before. One of the hardest things for me when leaving high school was being separated from my best friends. We’d never spent more than a few days apart, let alone months on end, so being able to see what they were up to, whether it was a Snapstory or a cheesy Facebook album, made it so much easier. Social media has definitely turned me into a private investigator…just give me a last name and a hometown and I’ll tell you everything you need to know and more…sorry.

So thank you social media for making me into a believer.
