“Fixing” Facebook One Step At A Time!

10 years ago, when I heard the word “Facebook”, I thought of a trending social network where I shared  pictures with my friends and family. Now a days, I think of a much more complex database in which people express their strong opinions through comments, shared links, statuses, etc. which can result in negative feedback.

Mark Zuckerberg’s goal for 2018 is to “fix” Facebook. He wants to focus on fixing issues that Facebook faces such as harassment, election interference, and making it overall a positive and meaningful social platform to be a part of.

I believe that in order to fix this issue, their needs to be a better system of monitoring the content people are putting on Facebook. There should be a number of people whose job it is to monitor and remove negative content on Facebook in order to positively impact Facebook’s appearance.

CNET tweeted about Zuckerberg’s plan and informed us that Facebook has a new focus, local news. They also showed a tweet from Zuckerberg himself explaining how local news is directly correlated with civil engagement. Zuckerberg stated that when people are aware of what is happening around them, they are more likely to take action and make a difference. I think this is a good idea not only because it is extremely important to know whats happening in your community, but because it can also bring positive energy to the Facebook community by connecting you with others around you in order to help better your community.

Many people think Zuckerberg’s plan is a great idea, others seem pretty skeptical.

Considering Facebook is such a complex platform, this is a difficult task for Zuckerberg to take on. Are we rooting for him? Yes. Will it be easy to change the dynamic of the platform? No! But I believe it will do more good than harm in the long run.

  1. I am not so sure that everyone is rooting for Mark Zuckerberg to be successful. Even going into the post, everything that is embedded is tweets, which shows that Twitter may be soon moving ahead of Facebook for all major things in social media. In particular, Twitter’s decision to switch to 280 characters makes it so that it can be used for more long-form social conversations. If Twitter is able to make it easier to look back at past moments, it may be a complete turnaround in the social media universe where Twitter takes over.
