GB’s Best of Fall’15

My top tweet of the semester was a picture at Ethan Zuckerman’s speaking engagement “Insurrectionist Civics & Digital Activism in the Age of Mistrust”. In the picture there are a few of my classmates, Ethan, and Prof. Grygiel. This post did particularly well because many of the people in the class retweeted or liked it, especially if they were in the picture. It received 741 impressions, 77 engagements and a 10.4% engagement rate.

The second top tweet is a promotion on a classmate’s health and fitness blog. I think what made this tweet good was that I used hashtags such as “fitness” and “broadcasting”, as well as including a picture. These hashtags contributed to the engagement on the tweet, as well as the class community who contributed the majority of the active engagement. The tweet generated 653 impressions, 37 engagements, and a 5.7% engagement rate.

One of the assigned tweets asked us to find a weekly hashtag and promote content along with it. For mine, I shared a Buzzfeed article along with the hashtag “TipTuesday”. Joining in on weekly hashtag provided me with a larger audience, as well as tagging Buzzfeed whose own Twitter gets a lot of traffic. As a result, the tweet made 313 impressions, 13 engagements, and 4.2% engagement rate given that Prof. Grygiel replied to my tweet and a conversation stemmed from that.

Another tweet from the Ethan Zuckerman speaking event made it to my top 10. During his presentation he presented an image that resonated with me and I decided to share it on Twitter, along with the caption “Equality does not mean Equity”. It received 309 impressions, 15 engagements, and a 4.9% engagement rate. The tweet was successful because of the people that attended the event, and the people in my class who retweeted it which brought about engagement.

Another assigned tweet asked us to share content from SoundCloud. For my tweet I found a current song “Here” by Alessia Cara and shared a remix from DopeMag. I attribute the success of this tweet to the numerous tags in it, the creator of the original song is tagged, as well as SoundCloud and the creator of the remix in addition to the hashtags. It earned 273 impressions, 9 engagements, a 3.3% engagement rate. For this particular tweet DopeMag (creator of remix) liked it.

My first tweet for the class was a recommendation about three people to follow. I suggested three women who were active social media users and tagged them. They all liked the tweet, which I am sure brought traffic to it because of their high number of followers, in addition to “FollowFriday” being a popular hashtag. The tweet earned 199 impressions, 6 engagements, and 3.0% engagement rate.

The tweet to promote our class WordPress was also one of my top 10. It earned 161 impressions, and I believe this is due to tagging NewhouseSU, as well the use of hashtags “advertising” and “bloggies2015”.

One of the assigned tweets asked us to recreate a past tweet which we were successful with. I recreated a shout-out tweet from a “FollowFriday” to a “Shout out Wednesday”. This tweet was also successful because I tagged two people that are active social media users and a highly influential account. This led to the tweet receiving a high number of impressions, 143 impressions.

For another class tweet we were assigned the task of making a Twitter collage. Seeing that cats rule the internet (and soon the world) and I have many of them, I made a collage of all four of them. The tweet made 135 impressions, 6 engagements, and a 4.4% engagement rate. I attribute this to the fact that cats are very popular on social media and by using the hashtag “CatLovers” I was able to tap into a larger audience.

The last one of my top 10 tweets was promoting National News Engagement Day. The tweet gained 126 impressions, 6 engagements, and 4.8% engagement rate. The adorable picture of the dog most likely helped, but the use of the hashtag “NewsEngagementDay” probably extended internationally expanding the audience.
