Last week, the HBO series Girls concluded its sixth and finale season to many mixed reviews. The series has won critics’ and audiences’ applause for its raw nature and humor in its realistic portrayal of New York women and their relationships. #GirlsHBO maintained trending status on Twitter throughout the weekend, showing audiences’ anxiety for the future of the four central characters—especially if their friendship would last after six seasons of toxicity.
Had a real, emotional reaction to tonight's #GirlsHBO. Sometimes people drift, relationships end, and loose ends never tie up. Such is life.

Some lauded Girls for showing the reality of women’s experience that mainstream media often disregards. The finale made no attempt to please viewers; its no simple, nicely tied-up ending showed the complications of life and the consequences of growing up.
"We were just doing our best." "Our best was awful." #GirlsHBO @girlsHBO @lenadunham your writing is beautiful. Fantastic pre series finale.

Of course, longtime fans quickly showed their heartbreak over the characters’ maturity, regardless of their “happy” ending or not.

Of course, longtime fans quickly showed their heartbreak over the characters’ maturity, regardless of their “happy” ending or not.
Others, though, disagreed for how young women were depicted as reckless and unstable.
#GirlsHBO #girls terrible representation of females in their 20s. I'm so glad to see it end & no longer see self absorbed reps of women.

Viewers also expressed disappointment for how the show ended with one of the characters, Hannah, whose life is finally resolved with the arrival of a baby. The classic, antiquated fixer-upper for women seemed out of place for the usually social commentary-charged show.
The #GirlsHBO finale: wanna hear a baby cry for 20 minutes and have nothing interesting happen? This one's for you!

Once again a woman's happy ending comes from having a child. I thought #GirlsHBO would be different. I was wrong. #childfree 🙄

The differences in opinion seemed to be more of an individual commentary for how audiences feel like women should live out their lives.
