How I Became a #Influencer

Starting this class, I did not have a twitter account. I started fresh with zero followers and now I have 23 which is a 2300% growth! The account name is @emilyskilman. I think that this is pretty good considering that this account was strictly made for the class. I believe that if I had used the account for other activity, I would have been able to grow my follower network. 11 out of the 23 of my followers were from class and the others were other Syracuse students or family members. In order to gain the followers from class that I did not know, I would follow them first so they could recognize that I was a classmate. I think also adding @NewhouseSU to my bio was a good way to gain followers so that people could recognize the school I went to. I also created an Instagram account for this class. The account name is @kilmanemily. I started fresh with this account and went from 0 to 28 followers, with a 2800% growth! Similar to twitter, I added “COM 427 student” in my bio so that other classmates could easily identify my account. Of the 28 followers, 10 were classmates. The others were family members who may have searched me and found my new account, or friends that had found the account as well.

After an entire semester of tweeting and posting, here are my top 10 posts of the Fall 2019

This tweet received the most impressions ever on my account: 627. This is the tweet where I self-promoted my Instagram food account, @Syrachews. I used fun hashtags such as #goodeats and#getinmybelly to engage with food lovers across the world which worked considering it got a lot more impressions than I have followers. It also recieved 20 engagements. In the tweet, I added the link to @Syrachews  so that the account could be easily accessed and people could engage with the account. The tweet received 4 likes and I also retweeted it again at a later date.

This tweet was put out on #followfriday, which is a hashtag I used. I included 3 of my sorority sisters who are also in the class and asked my followers to follow them. I also used the #LML which is a national AEPhi saying that could attract sisters from all over the country. The tweet received 5 likes and 17 engagements. It also had a higher engagement rate at 6.1%. I think this is because I tagged three other accounts in the tweet and used a popular hashtag.

I believe this tweet was fun for my followers. Everyone loves to give their opinions so polls are a great way to engage with followers. This poll got 8 votes and an engagement rate of 8.9%.

This tweet only got 2 likes, but 156 impressions. In this tweet, I used various popular hashtags and also tagged two popular accounts. #ICYMI is a great hashtag to use when referring to something that has happened in the past that you want to bring up. #bieberfever is a popular hashtag for all Justin Bieber fans. I used this hashtag so that Bieber fans would be able to come across this tweet easily.

This was my first post on Instagram. I posted a throwback to the first day of classes and tagged my friend Katie, who is also in the class. I used a fun hashtag #timeflieswhenyourehavingfun which is broad and could be connected to many types of posts. This post got 14 likes and 9 comments, which was my most likes and comments. I think that when you first join the social media community, followers like to engage with your first post and welcome you to the community.

This tweet was one of my first and got 254 impressions. This is interesting to me because I only used the class hashtag as it was one of my first posts and I was just learning how to get more engagement on posts. The engagement rate on this post was also pretty high at 10.6%. I also believe that tweets with rich content, such as photos, get more attention than just text.

This was one of my favorite tweets I created, and it also got some good attention! This tweet received 4 likes, 384 impressions and even a reply from the professor! I thought this GIF was pretty funny. If I were to redo this tweet, I would add some relevant hashtags in order to gain more engagement. This tweet was also done relatively early in the year so I had not learned how important other hashtags were at the time.

This Instagram post was also a throwback from the summer from my trip to California. I used the #summertimesadness which can bring in other users that are missing summer. I also tagged Manhattan Beach, California which is where I was visiting. Sometimes for recommendations, I will go through locations on Instagram to see what other people have visited near by! This post got 12 likes and 3 comments.

This tweet actually got no likes, which I was a little shocked about, but behind the scenes it actually had 180 impressions! I think this was because of the hashtags I used. #Newhousealumni is a great tag to use to connect with other individuals from the school and #emmys is also very popular around the time that the award show was aired.

This last tweet is the only one that did not have the #NHsmc. I opeend a peanut butter cup to see that it was HALF EATEN so I took my frustration to Twitter to see if I could get a response. This tweet gained 483 impresions, 2 likes and a few tweets back as well. @Wegmans also got in contact with me. There  were 99 engagements and 20.5% engagement rate. This tweet showed me that social media accounts are great places to talk with companies as it is quick and easily accessible.
