Influence Growth and Analysis through Social Media

Part 1: INFLUENCE

I used to use Twitter back in middle school but the older I got, the less the platform peaked my interest. Therefore, I deleted the app and have only been reintroduced for COM427 purposes. I created a new account, and started with 0 followers. Over the course of 4 months, my Twitter followers have raised to 14, resulting in a low growth percent rate. Some of my followers are class mates while others are random users who probably came across my account through my mentions or hashtags.

Some things that worked for increasing my influence and network was my use of hashtags and mentions. Adding hashtags to my tweets was an easy way for me to get my content exposed to the public. Likewise, mentioning celebrities or well-known figures also helped me connect with others who had similar or contradicting views. Tactics like posting meaningless tweets without hashtags or mentions do not help raise your personal influence and network, which I realized quite quickly.

Part 2: EXECUTION

For this Tweet, I used the hashtag #ICYMI and set a specific time for my Twitter to publish this tweet to remind people about a past occurrence. I think it got a lot of impressions because it is about something current, timely, and interesting to many people. It also was able to remind the public of something that happened some time ago but is still relevant.

Here, I created my own meme. I think that using an image from Spongebob to create something memorable is smart. People immediately recognize Spongbob and its’ famous characters so adding relatable text to a recognizable image can help to gain the attention of viewers.

Using humor in Tweets is always a good idea. People connect and relate to funny sayings or phrases, especially when paired with a meme. I think this tweet worked because it was relatable to a large audience and also a visual component is always helpful. Likewise, a common hashtag like #sorrynotsorry has been popular for years and can help to spread content.

In this Tweet, I linked Hailey Biebers Instagram and also used a trending hashtag. For those reasons, this tweet was seen by a lot of people (way more than the number of followers I have). I realized that using methods like popular hashtags will help your content get more recognition.

In this tweet, I self-promoted my Instagram. I realized that promoting yourself on other platforms is a good way to let your followers stay tuned with what you’re up to. If a Twitter follower of mine enjoys my Tweets, they may want to check out what I’m posting on my other social media platforms.

Posting a selfie on your birthday is a guaranteed way to get some likes. On my Instagram account, I posted this picture a week after my 21st birthday. People are always more responsive when there is something important happening like a birthday, holiday, celebration, etc. Also, I used some hashtags that were funny and relevant to birthdays.

People love seeing pictures of food. I think posting pictures of good-looking food is eye-catching. I posted a picture with three different pizza pies hoping my viewers would think of which pie looks best to them. I think this photo could be engaging and even a conversation starter for people scrolling through their Instagram feed.

Here is another food post. I used the tactic of adding multiple photos into one post. I think this is a smart method for when you want people to see more than one photo but in only one post. Using the slide setting is convenient when you have multiple images that relate to one larger concept. Also, I edited each picture on VSCO in order to make them more appealing and bright.

Scenic pictures are always eye-catching. On a platform like Instagram, people post things that they want others to see. An exciting vacation in a destination like Greece is sure to catch peoples attention. Also I used a catchy hashtag that is common. The photo is also posted as a perfect square which is how the original Instagram operated. If the picture had better quality, I think it could have received more of a reaction from my followers.

I Instagrammed a picture of my dog captioning it: lazy Sundays because I believe that people could relate to this image. Many of my followers are pet lovers so that is attention-catching, likewise Sundays’ are notorious for being lazy days so the caption pairs well with the photo. This photo didn’t receive as many likes as it could because it is a little boring. In the future, I think a video or boomerang could have given a post like this more attention.

All in all, this social media class helped me further understand how to create meaningful, relatable, and sharable content. After re-making a Twitter, I learned that hashtags are a key component to add to tweets. And, since I’ve been an Instagram user for years I felt pretty confident when posting, but, I learned that filters and personalization are the most efficient ways to get my content liked and noted. I learned that you may think you know all there is to know about platforms like Twitter and Instagram but there are specific tactics and methods that could make your content spread rapidly.
