How is social media impacting my relationships?

When I decided to transfer to Syracuse University, I knew there were a lot of great things coming my way. On the other side, I was also aware that I was going to be apart from my family and closest friends. During my first days at SU, I was very excited to meet new people and create new relationships. It worked, but nothing could compare to my friends back home, the ones I basically grew up with. Thanks to social media, my relationship with my friends hasn’t changed. We still do those silly things we usually do when we’re together, except that we don’t do it face to face, but instead, we use Skype or we FaceTime.

I’m sure my relationship with my family won’t change despite the distance. However, I have to make sure my parents and sibling know how I’m doing. I talk to my family every single day about every single thing. Yes, they care that much about me and they want to know everything I’m doing, especially my mother. In WhatsApp, we have a group message in which we all of send pictures and share our day to day experiences.

Social media has a huge impact on my life because like psychologist and writer Shelley Galasso Bonanno said on her article about social media , “the Internet has offered [me] a convenient way to locate, reconnect and rekindle relationships that otherwise may have been lost.”
