For my viral content challenge I created a meme I thought many students could relate to. I had the aim of building a larger larger audience within the Syracuse community. I thought this meme would perform well because it is very relatable and always sparks a good chuckle.
When you walk into class and no one told you about the exam.
Objective of campaign
- Engage with my twitter audience, they are mainly students and a lot of them work for the Daily Orange so will recognize Annie
- Build a wider audience with shares. This is relatable content that people will share amongst friends on campus, building upon my current audience
I think this campaign was successful in some ways and less so in others. The promotion drove a lot of people to my tweet and to my handle. My twitter performed excellently during the week, likely as a result of a combination of this campaign and some other popular content I produced. I think I should have pushed this meme a little bit more beyond the campaign but nonetheless, I am pleased with the engagement.
However, it did not attract new followers as I had hoped and the retweets and likes were not from the Syracuse area. I think I should have narrowed the audience a little and directed it more to that audience.
The picture did very well the first few days on Imgur, racking up 300 views and several comments. The comments surprised me as they were criticizing me/the subject for not going to class etc. This showed to me that some corners of the internet do not know how to take a joke.
All in all, I am happy with the outcome of this campaign. Although most of the impressions and engagements were as a result of the promotion, it still drove traffic to my page and I understand how Twitter ads work for the future.
It is funny because I also received some backlash on imgur after I posted my meme. I don’t know what it is but people love to criticize you behind a computer screen. Unfortunately for us, we had to deal with it.
