When looking back on my viral content creation experience as well as the 412 engagements collected through both Twitter and Imgur, there were a few rights and wrongs, or do’s and don’ts that I noticed for content creation.
When creating the content for the challenge, my meme, I chose to use two very personal aspects for the image as well as the copy. While at the time, I thought this was comical and understood the background of it, I soon realized through engagement levels as well as our class dot exercise that other people were not as intrigued by my meme as I was. By choosing a saying that was personal to my family as well as images of myself, it went to show that people look for humor. The more successful memes I noticed were generic and not as personalized as mine.
Although personalization is maybe a “don’t” for meme creation I did notice a positive take away of my viral content as well. The topic of my meme was new and trending: the great battle of Instagram vs Snapchat stories. I think picking a trending topic for meme creation is a great strategy. If people are talking about it, what is a better reason to make fun of it? Y0u’re essentially giving the people what they want to hear, and who doesn’t love that?
