I was late to the social media game. I grew up in a small suburb outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where everybody knew everything about each other’s lives. I didn’t need social media to keep up with people and what they were doing, because my town was so small that if something happened last night, I was sure to hear about it in front of my locker before the bell rang. Little did I know this was about to change quite drastically.
After my sophomore year of high school, my parents got a divorce and my mom moved to Dallas, Texas, where she went to college. I decided to leave everything I knew and go with her. This was an incredibly hard step in my life, because my new town and school were so big, that it was overwhelming for me. However after getting acclimated, I loved it there.
A lot of people use social media for more complex reasons; for business, for marketing themselves, for strategy, to advertise, etc. Social media will always have a place in my heart because it allowed me to keep in touch with little old Derry Pennsylvania, and retain some of my best friends to this day. While now I’m in college in New York, and I’m beginning to learn a lot about how social media can be implemented in a plethora of situations as a beneficiary, I still use social media to keep up with the lives of people that matter to me in both of my other homes; and to me, that is the best thing I can think to use social media for.
Social media is a remarkable tool for keeping in touch especially for seniors who keep in touch with kids, grandkids, and more. #socialmedia
