My #NHsmc Experience

I think it is safe to say that social media has become such a huge presence in society. This semester, I have taken a social media class and learned more than I can imagine. I was able learn the insides and outs of Twitter as well as social media usage in a professional setting.

I had an active Twitter handle for a while before taking this course, but I took a break from it for over a year. From the beginning of the semester, I started with 175 followers. Now, it has grown to 200. My Klout score also increased from a 16 to a 34.

I was able to expand my Twitter network by engaging with the Syracuse community, posting tweets about trending topics, and using relevant hashtags. The one thing I believe I could definitely continue working on is interacting more with my fellow followers, whether it is a simple “like” or “reply”.

Below, I collected my top ten tweets during this semester that I think have been successful based on number of impressions, engagements, and engagement rate.

This was my first #FollowFriday tweet. I received 1,069 impressions, 38 engagements, and a 3.6% engagement rate. The accounts that I tagged also have a relatively high Twitter following which brought in more engagements.

This was my first tweet in which I posted an original photo. It received 433 impressions, 32 engagements, and an engagement rate of 7.4%. It was a good quality photo in which it showed my interests for fashion and food.

This was my very first time creating a photo collage on Twitter. It received 378 impressions, 30 engagements, and an engagement rate of 7.9%. I thought it definitely could have gained more engagements and impressions if I inserted a couple of hashtags (#weekend, #nyc, #brunch). However, it was still a successful tweet being that it was my first collage.

My second photo collage consisted of some of my favorite places that I visited when I studied abroad last semester — London, Paris, and Venice. This tweet received 417 impressions, 26 engagements, and a 6.2% engagement rate.

In comparison to my other abroad post, this photo collage received 580 impressions, 22 engagements, and a 3.8% engagement rate. I wanted to share one of my favorite things about my travels in Italy — having the luxury of eating gelato for a whole week.

This Twitter assignment had to do with sharing something positive about myself – how my first semester of senior year was going. It received 508 impressions, 7 engagements, and a 1.4% engagement rate. This tweet was more on the personal side, which I don’t usually go for on my social media accounts. However, I still thought it was important to share something that I would not normally tweet about.

For this Twitter assignment we had to create a never before used hashtag. I created #BOGOBurritoText when Chipotle was promoting their matching ingredients game. I even got a nice response from them afterwards. It received 373 impressions, 8 engagements, and a 2.1% engagement rate.

For this assignment, I used the Klout search to find an industry expert on branding. I reached out to @brandchannel, which is an online website and a daily newsletter about brand marketing and branding. To my surprise, @brandchannel responded back to my tweet and also followed me. I thought this was a very influential post because brand marketing is something I am strongly interested in pursuing a career in. After this post, I received a couple of more followers from other marketing companies, including @ceros. This tweet received 245 impressions, 7 engagements, and an engagement rate of 2.9%.

For this tweet, the NY Giants game against the Baltimore Ravens was trending on Twitter. #GiantsPride was a topic and conversation that I jumped into when Odell Beckham Jr. proceeded with a touchdown for the Giants. I shared a Vine that I thought was relatable to how most Giants fans were feeling after that touchdown. This tweet received 614 impressions, 16 engagements, with a rate of 2.6%.

For this Twitter assignment, I created a public Twitter list of some of my favorite food places in New York City and promoted it on my feed by including a screenshot of the different handles and the link of my list. I received 388 impressions, 24 engagements, and a rate of 6.2%.

Overall, one key takeaway from social media this semester is: creating a tweet with 140 characters or less takes a lot of creative thought and planning. Not all of my tweets were considered successful. However, I was able test out what methods worked and which did not. Utilizing Twitter Analytics is also another tool that I found very useful. I never imagined myself as a heavy Twitter user, but after this class, I was able to explore different opportunities and can definitely see myself continue to use Twitter once this class is over.
