NHsmc Influencer

Influence & Analysis:

As a student in COM427 in the fall of 2019, I created a new Twitter account and joined the Twitter community this past August. As the course went on, I didn’t really engage much with influencers and political or entertainment accounts, and mostly stuck to following people in the class or my close friends accounts. Since I joined Twitter for the purpose of this class, I didn’t necessarily gain a huge following for my page. I started off with zero followers, and as of today, I have 13 followers and am following 20 people. My following growth has gone up 5% since this past August. Some things that worked for me and gaining followers was following people in our COM 427 class. If I followed someone in our class, they most likely followed me back which helped me gain a small following. The people who don’t follow me back are verified celebrities such as Ellen, Kris Jenner and CNN. Something I expected to work that didn’t was when I tagged someone with an average amount of followers, or liked other tweets, I assumed that different accounts would follow me and engage with my page, however most of the time that didn’t happen.

Execution:

The post that I got the most engagement with in November was about protecting Israel. This tweet has 227 impressions, 2 engagements and a .9% engagement rate. When executing this tweet, I kept in mind the assignment for the week, which was to share or retweet something that will make a difference. During the time of the semester that I tweeted this, I was aware that there was attacks on Israel. Being Jewish, this upset me and I wanted to tweet out to the public and pray and send condolences, so I used a skill that we learned in class called quote tweeting and quote tweeted the Israel Defense Force (IDF) tweet and made my own twist to it. I also used the #IStandWithIsrael hashtag, which allowed viewers of the hashtag to see my tweet and click on my page. Although my tweet has no RT’s or favorites, I think that quote tweeting the IDF along with using the hashtag allowed me to gain engagements on my tweet.

My second most popular tweet from the month of November was when I shared a link to my meme on imgur. This tweet has 196 impressions, 13 engagements, 112 organic impressions and a 6.6% engagement rate. The reason I executed this tweet was to promote a link to the public. When I tweeted this, I did not do it for a ‘graded assignment’ for the class, I did it so that my meme would gain views by having my followers click my link and engage with my meme. I used a variety of hashtags such as #funny #memes because they were trending hashtags at the time. Using hashtags allows the public more access to your page and that’s why I got some engagement.

Another tweet that had a lot of impressions was a tweet that I quote tweeted from Nikki Solomon from when we worked on an in class assignment. This tweet has 62 impressions, 55 organic impressions, a 1.7% engagement rate and 1 like. When executing this tweet, our strategy was to share a photo and tag @SyracuseU on twitter to get viewers engaged in our information. We tweeted this because it isn’t right that Syracuse is spending $20M on a brand new veterans center, however we didn’t have off of class for veterans day. This tweet wasn’t as popular as some of my other tweets and I think that it’s because I didn’t use any trending hashtags, and didn’t use rich user experiences as much like tagging the university or even the chancellor.

I analyzed who the public is more in favor of – Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian using Google Trends and then screen shotted the results and tweeted it out on my page. This tweet was one of my more popular ones for the month of October in terms of engagements and impressions. This tweet has 311 impressions, 3 engagements, 142 organic impressions, and a 1% engagement rate. I strategically chose two celebrities that are often talked about and then tweeted out a screen shot of the Google Trends graph so that the audience would be able to see visuals, and then click on the image. I also think that mentioning celebrities and using the hashtags #KimKardashian and #TaylorSwift can bring in more engagement because viewers can click any hashtag that says Kim or Taylor’s names and my tweet will be brought up.

Something I was proud of from this semester was when I tweeted at Kat Von D Beauty’s account and she liked my tweet. Kat has 225K followers on Twitter and runs a beauty account. This worked because I tagged her account as well as added the hashtag #beauty on my tweet. I received 1,185 impressions, 9 engagements, 8 profile clicks, 1 like, and a .8% engagement rate.

Another time I got a response to one of my tweets was from a Newhouse professor named RC. Although he’s not verified, he still has a large following on twitter. I saw that Newhouse tweeted about him and one of his courses. I quote tweeted Newhouse’s tweet and tagged him as well as explained a personal story that he would find interesting  and he responded. I got 128 impressions, 4 engagement, one reply, and a 2% engagement rate.

I was surprised to see that my ‘memes in real life’ tweet received 1,385 impressions, 46 engagements, 1 retweet, 3 likes and a 3.3% engagement rate. The reason that I was so surprised that this tweet had so much engagement was because his was one of my first tweets in September, before I had any followers. I also didn’t use any hashtags except for the class one, and I didn’t even tag anyone in it either.

I was also surprised at the fact that this tweet received 772 impressions, 16 engagements, 338 organic engagements, 2 likes and a 2.1% engagement rate. I even mention in my tweet that I have no followers, so seeing a higher number of impressions and engagement surprised me. A strategy I used when tweeting this was talking about vine. I know that vine was loved and is missed by many people in this generation, so I thought that people could relate to my thoughts.

Another strategy I used to utilize my tweets was to use a gif. I tweeted this in early October when the Breaking Bad was coming out on Netflix. I had seen a variety of tweets about the movie and wanted to make one of my own, so I used #BreakingBad along with a gif of one of the main characters and received 176 impressions, 1 engagement, and a .6% engagement rate.

One of my favorite tweets that I posted was this picture of food. I enjoyed doing this because I got to reminisce of all the food I ate this past summer while still getting some engagement. I got 185 impressions, 8 engagements, and a 4.3% engagement rate.
