Part 1: Influence:
As I reflect on my overall growth on Twitter from when I made my account on 8/29 to now 11/28, I went from 0 followers to 47 followers, thus achieving a 100% growth rate. Since Twitter was a new social media platform for me, I had to become comfortable with tweeting. I think I am a modest Twitter user. A way to gain followers is to constantly tweet and engage with other users. I think if I used the platform more frequently, I would have gained more followers.
The most successful technique I found in gaining more followers, was by changing my Twitter bio. I tagged the Newhouse school and hash tagged some interests of mine. By doing so I attracted some other Newhouse students and people who share similar interests as me.
Other techniques I used include, respond to other users’ tweets, using trending week day hashtags like #wednesdaywisdom or during major events like the Grammys I would use the hashtag #ICYMI. I found live tweeting to be a great tool as many people are on Twitter at the same time/doing the same. Live tweeting and using trending hashtags allow users to engage with each other easier.
I think important factors in growing your Twitter engagement, influence and following include the amount you tweet and the way you tweet. Prior to this class I never used Twitter and as a result I endured a large learning curve. It was beneficial to learn ways to better a “tweet” and learn different tools twitter offers like doing twitter polls.
Part 2: Execution
TWITTER:
I used the Twitter analytics website to help me analyze my top 10 tweets and see which techniques I used were most beneficial. Below are my top 10 posts and the analytics to show the success on each post!

This post was my top tweet. I think what made this tweet successful was the use of hashtags and using trending topics to engage users. These elements drew people to my tweet and ultimately engaging with them. This is also a relatable tweet and when you relate to others it will increase engagement.
Second place not too shabby! Thanks for my makeover 🤦🏼♀️#blindmakeovers #nhsmc @cbstamps @JuliaChatzky @reneecitren @oliviasharf pic.twitter.com/2AKX47bY3Q

This post was also one of my most successful tweets. The success for this tweet was a result of hashtags and live tweeting through an event. In my class we had a challenge on periscope and throughout each groups challenge all students were live tweeting and watching each others challenges/ engaging with each other. My group came in second place so after the event I tweeted about getting second place using hashtags that related to the event so my tweet would appear when other students went back and watched those challenges.
It’s about that time of the year #thanksgiving #blackfriday #goodluck #NHsmc

I think this post was so successful in reaching a high number of impressions because it was linked to another platform, Imgur. I made sure to include relevant/popular hashtags to try and reach as many people as I can tweeting or looking at posts relating to those same topics.
Its almost time! Tune into #Periscope to watch me get a blind makeover by my #nhsmc friends! wish me luck!

This post had a high success in reaching a high impressions rate. The actual engagement was lower than I excepted as I know hash-tagging periscope would gain more traction. However, the goal of this post was to inform my users on a challenge I had coming up so actual favoriting wasn’t as important as reaching people. I would of liked a higher number in retweets to help promote the challenge I had coming up. In the future, more hashtags and tags could of made this tweet more successful.

For this post, I scheduled a tweet on tweetdeck to be re posted at a later time. I decided to pick a tweet that I got positive engagement which was the Wednesday wisdom tweet (trending topics). It didn’t do as well as the first time around but still received a high amount of impressions.
The next thing on my to do list #NHsmc https://t.co/fr6oBZ8PW4

I love watching tasty videos, really any videos that show off really yummy looking food. I was scrolling on twitter and came across a delicious looking banana cake video. I decided to re post it for anyone else who is a banana cake lover. The amount of impressions was lower than other posts and I think that was due to the lack of hashtags included.
Anyone going abroad to #Australia? follow my #instagram– https://t.co/O7ooP7oSbn and see where I’ve been! #Abroad #acrosstheworld #nhsmc pic.twitter.com/nVT6AldCq7
— Ashlyn Banner (@AshlynBanner) October 1, 2018
I was surprised by the low numbers on this post. For this post, the techniques I used included another platform-Instagram and hashtags. I also wanted to make this post relatable (not just to promote my handle) so I made the post about going abroad in Australia. Students who are also going abroad there could potentially be interested in looking at my instagram for ideas when they go!
Loving the new @TLAbyMorganStew line! Congrats @Morgan_Stewart! #NHsmc #influencers
— Ashlyn Banner (@AshlynBanner) October 8, 2018
The goal was to engage with an influencer. I love Morgan Stewart so I thought I would try and reach her and her following. I tweeted at the same time her new clothing line was coming out so I thought she would have a lot of traction around it. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a lot of engagement around this tweet but still hit a good amount of impressions.
Always impressed by the @NewhouseSU Alumni! @MsTiffanyBender would love to hear about your journey to @TeenVogue #newhousenetwork #nhsmc
— Ashlyn Banner (@AshlynBanner) October 8, 2018
The goal was to engage with a Newhouse Alumni. I wanted to try and target an alumni not a lot of other students were reaching so I kept scrolling and came across this woman. She has similar interests as me and I wanted to try and engage with her as I am job searching. Even though I didn’t get a response directly from her, it still hit a good amount of impressions. I think in the future, when trying to reach a direct response from someone with many followers, tweeting a few times could increase that chance.
#ICYMI still not over it. #nhsmc https://t.co/AXbb56029O
— Ashlyn Banner (@AshlynBanner) September 26, 2018
For this tweet, I used the hashtag “ICYMI” meaning in case you missed it to re post an epic Emmy moment. The Emmys was a huge event so I thought this would be a great topic to tweet about and it was a perfect “ICYMI” moment. I think the reason for the lack of impressions/engagements could be due to be not tagging the Emmys or adding more hashtags surrounding the event.
INSTAGRAM:
I wanted to mention Instagram because I think this is an important social media platform that is a great platform to use for more creative purposes. I created an Instagram account about a month after making my Twitter account. Instagram is something I am much more comfortable with. I started with 0 followers and ended with 66, thus achieving a 100% growth rate.
Instagram and twitter are similar and overlap in terms of techniques that can be used to increase engagement. For example, hashtags are important in Instagram just like twitter. However, in Instagram we have the option to tag a location, another great way to engage users. Other users can look up posts by these hashtags and location tags. Just like twitter, you can also tag other users in Instagram posts. By doing so, I saw an increase in likes/comments and overall engagement on my Instagram posts.
I found having a common theme is beneficial in Instagram. I created my Instagram around the theme of travel. I had a lot of pictures of so many places around the world from going abroad that I wanted to share with the community.
Below, I have attached three posts that demonstrate how techniques including-hashtags, tagging other users and locations can all help your engagement rate. Each time I created a new post, I would receive more followers as a result of theses techniques.
