I use social media as a way to interact with my own personal interests and communities I can share that with. The motivation for being an active ‘Grammer, Snapper or Pinner is quite simple — everyone is doing it. Social media channels are as powerful as they are for one reason and one reason alone; enough willing individuals use the various networking sites out there.
Now I wouldn’t exactly describe myself as a follower (no pun intended) but I definitely think the value of social media simply comes from the quality of media output by your “friends”. Take, for example, the awesome online music community. Through Spotify, Cymbal, Soundcloud, and Instagram I am able to easily and quickly share my favorite songs or friends’ DIY music like never before (and if I want to work in the field professionally, all I have to do is send some messages to the right people on LinkedIn). On Facebook, I am able to RSVP to festivals and see who else in my area has made plans to go, and Twitter is a great source for niche news outlets and for entering giveaways.

These mediums would not be the same, however, if I wasn’t virtually surrounded by useful sources and “friends”. I definitely think that social media can help anyone build a passion and connect with like-minded individuals in new ways than ever before.
