Background
I joined in on the boomer-bashing memes and created a meme that roasted boomer buying habits. My meme used the “Nobody: ___:” format because that’s also popular right now. I inserted an image of an ugly plate I saw last year that I thought it was “memable” and would fit with the boomer theme. Instead of just saying “Boomer:” I said “Boomer Aunt” to it to make it slightly more targeted
Objective
The objective for my meme was to gain at least 100 Imgur views, 75 Reddit upvotes, 50 Instagram likes, 10 retweets, and 50 Facebook reactions by 11/1, the date that the challenge closed.
Results
Overall, the campaign had highs and lows. As far as what didn’t work, the Twitter campaign was the weakest. My account doesn’t have a following which is partly why the tweet got zero re-tweets. I did get 117 impressions and 11 engagements but it sill didn’t each my goal. I should have used more hashtags to get it more exposure. The hashtag “#boomer” is too broad, and I think the post got lost in the shuffle.
Facebook performed better as I got 39 reactions to my post. While this was under my target, I did get “laugh” and “angry” reactions, which showed deeper engagement. The Reddit campaign also just missed the mark. I got 55 upvotes, which is a 20 vote deficit, but the engagement made up for it. Some people came to the defense of the plates, which I found amusing.
Other platforms did better. On Instagram, I got 53 likes on my personal account, which exceeded the 50 like goal. I had predicted that my friends would enjoy it, and it is evident that some of them did. The best results I got were on Imgur. The meme received 753 views, which was well over my 100 view goal. I was surprised by that given my performance on the other platforms but satisfied that it was over seven times what my goal was.
On the whole, the success of my campaign hinged on the way it was marketed. I felt more comfortable posting on Instagram, Imgur, and Reddit because they were platforms that I understood, and the numbers were reflective of that. I should have tailored my posts on Twitter and Facebook to the platforms better by adding more engaging hashtags on Twitter, as I had discussed earlier, and possibly sharing my meme to more groups on Facebook.
