“You Can’t Sit With Us”- Campaign Analysis

The infamous movie, Mean Girls is notorious for one scene that takes place in a school cafeteria. The three main characters who are the “mean” girls are all approached by a girl who is not a part of their friend group. She then asks to sit with them and one of the “mean” girls says, “You can’t sit with us!”. This line is one of the most remembered lines in the movie. Air Pods have become such a social trend today with people referencing having Air Pods is like being a part of a group or a movement. I connected an old trend of sitting with the “cool” girls at the lunch table and having Air Pods together by recreating the line to say, “You can’t sit with us unless you have Air Pods.”, including Air Pods in all of the “mean” girls ears.

Objectives:

  • In the first three days of sharing on Twitter and Imgur, the meme should have generated at least 10 retweets and 50 likes on Twitter, and 200 views on Imgur.
  • Four days into sharing, with additional posts on Facebook and Instagram, the meme should have generated at least 300 views on Imgur and 50 likes on Instagram.
  • In the final four days of my campaign, with an additional post in my sorority group me, the meme should have generated in total, at least 500 views on Imgur, 15-20 retweets on Twitter and 50 likes on Instagram.

My meme was inspired by a tweet by one of my friends who has a decent following on twitter, his tweet was:

When I saw this tweet in my feed I wanted to create a meme about Air Pods because recently there has been a lot of popular memes that have went viral surrounding the popular trend of having Air Pods. I wanted to pick something to relate to Air Pods that was relevant, memorable and something that related to the topic of “fitting in”. Mean Girls was the first movie that came to mind when thinking of fitting in and following a crowd. “You can’t sit with us” is one of the most famous lines that came out of the movie, so I paired a famous movie line with a trend that is happening now. I felt that putting Air Pods onto the characters in the picture would generate some laughs because of the famous movie quote, and the older movie paired with a new trend.

Here is my meme:

My campaign was successful in which I met most of my objectives. When trying to share my meme, I believe that Facebook and Instagram worked best for me. After sharing my meme on Facebook in different groups that I am part of, I immediately started to see views. I asked the members in the same group as me if they would be willing to share it with their friends, which then doubled the amount of views. However, when posting my meme on Instagram I made sure to include relevant hashtags such as #funnymemes, #airpods, #airpodgang, #meangirlsmemes, and #meangirls. These hashtags made my post visible under many different explore pages that mentioned mean girls, AirPods and funny memes. I gained more interaction and engagement with my post on Instagram than I did with Facebook. My meme generated 66 likes on instagram which was more than I planned on in my objectives. Unfortunately Twitter was not a success for me. My meme generated 10 likes and 11 retweets. I found it hard with my low following and with so many memes out there that my post did not generate as much engagement as I would have liked. Although posting on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and in my group chats in group me my meme generated 1,907 views on Imgur.

I feel that my campaign was a success in which I reached almost all of my objectives. The next time I want to go viral, I will be sure to strategically research the highest engaged hashtags before posting and will also build a higher following in order to ensure a higher engagement rate on all of my platforms.
