Twitter Zero to a Twitter Hero (almost)

On the first day of COM 427, Professor Grygiel asked everyone why they took the class. My response was that I wanted to beat my dad in Twitter presence. Although I didn’t come even remotely close to beating his 15.6K follower count or get myself verified, I believe I’m on the right track to growing my presence. Since the beginning of the semester, my Twitter audience has increased 53.57% from 84 followers to 129. Although I started the class with 84 followers, I had previously only tweeted once before since creating my account in February, 2010. In addition to an increase in Twitter followers, my Klout score also increased from 14 to 33 over the course of the semester, peaking briefly at 39.

The day my Klout score reached 39 was also the day of the Periscope challenge, and all of the members on my team retweeted me to promote our Periscope feed – thanks to my team for the engagement and Klout boost!

Let’s take a walk down memory lane of my top 10 posts from this semester:

Unbeknownst to me, Molly Bloom has a cult following! Molly Bloom replied to my tweet causing for some of her fans to reply into that chain, like, and retweet this tweet. I tried to recreate this magic by tweeting something similar for the #ICYMI assignment, however that tweet did not come close to the success of this one.

In this post I tagged 3 marketing professionals for a #FollowFriday. I believe this tweet was successful because all three responded in some form, and all three followed me. Dan Tyre replied to my tweet and we went on to have a brief discussion on Twitter, Mike Stelzner also replied thanking me, and Christopher Penn liked my tweet. Through these engagements with influential, verified users my tweet got more exposure making this one of my best tweets of the semester

Thanks to @jmgrygiel retweeting this, I was able to gain a lot more exposure than I could have on my own, which helped to make this tweet successful. If I were to post this photo again, I would try to come up with a punchier caption that utilizes a popular hashtag. Also, I believe that many of the profile clicks were likely from my classmates; many followed me after this tweet.

Destiny Mall, who I mentioned in the tweet, both retweeted and liked this tweet which helped gain impressions and votes! 10 of the votes came from my my tweet, and 20 votes were entered on Destiny’s retweet.

This tweet was obviously successful because of how adorable my puppies are! Just kidding. But, similarly to my social media IRL tweet, I’m assuming this tweet received many profile clicks from my peers in the class since it was at the beginning of the semester. Additionally, I believe using the hashtags #doglover and #dogs helped generate exposure.

I believe this tweet was successful because it was timely, and the people I mentioned engaged with me (probably to promote their show). I posted this tweet the night before the season premiere of UnReal, and both the actress and the show’s Twitter accounts liked my tweet.

This tweet was from a lecture given at Syracuse University, so I tagged those involved and hashtagged the university. The people tagged engaged with the tweet, however I was hoping Syracuse University would react to it too, I wonder if I had tagged them rather than hashtagging I could have reached them better.

Although this tweet ranked in my Twitter Analytics, I believe I did not do a good job on this tweet. I think I could have used better hashtags to attract a wider audience.

9. Five Hashtags

Thank you hashtags! This post is my most liked Instagram. This post had more likes than I had followers at the time of posting it, so hashtags / location played a big part in this post’s success. I was also proud of this post because I got comments from users I don’t know!

10. Insta Gallery

This is my second most liked Instagram. I believe this post is successful because my followers thought my dogs were cute. Although I used hashtags, all of the likes came from users who already followed me rather than users I don’t know.
