“Wig!” Campaign Analysis

Objective from marketing plan:

Pop culture often has many aspects we can pull from to relate to our own lives, and sometimes these references may be comical. Khloe Kardashian, best known for her role on her show Keeping Up With The Kardashians on E!, is a social media and reality television star–often known for her comedic approach to her audience. This meme represents Khloe’s personality very well, as it is something she would likely laugh at while viewing–as she could likely relate.

Internet meme that inspired “Wig!”:

Khloe Kardashian is a known character of viral internet memes, and while looking for examples of these memes, I found this one. This meme inspired mine as it is comical, represents Khloe Kardashians comical-nature, and gives the overall effect to the viewer that I wanted my internet meme to give. This meme below shows Khloe’s thought process in a comical way—whereas my meme shows something similar: Khloe sarcastically projecting her new hair color while waiting to hear a response from her audience.

Goals:

The primary goal of this campaign is to have my meme go viral, as this is the type of meme that would circulate Twitter due to its comical and relatable appeal. With the popularity of pop culture in our society, including Khloe Kardashian being in the meme, it provides greater chance for the meme to circulate social media—potentially gaining Khloe’s attention.

Analysis of Campaign (What worked and what didn’t):

While analyzing the success of my meme campaign, I understand that I have met all of my objectives to date—although tomorrow’s final objective seems unobtainable. Meeting 600 views by tomorrow seems unobtainable due to the view count being at a current 560 views.

What worked for this campaign was the ability to broadcast the meme on my social channels and to my friends and family. This allowed the initial views to increase more rapidly. Throughout my time as a content creator and brand ambassador for several brands on Instagram, I have learned the importance of the initial number of views and likes to the overall success of the post. After posting to Imgur, the invoice of downvotes showed me that this meme might get negative attention—but I reminded myself that negative attention is still attention, and that the post would likely meet most of my objectives.

On the opposing side, what did not work with my Imgur meme is the influence the Kardashians have on my campaign. I had not realized prior, but it turns out that the Imgur community does not take a liking to the Kardashians. After searching for Kardashian-related posts on Imgur, I found that there were not many, and I then realized that it might be challenging for my post to do well on this platform. Although, it ended up doing OK—aside from the downvotes.

Final engagement number:

My final engagement number for my meme “Wig!” is 560 views. My meme has 4 upvotes and 5 downvotes, with two comments from @awconnon, one with a gif of someone laughing, and one saying “HAHAHAHAHAHA”. I reposted my meme to Imgur after creation to see if it would get more engagements, although it didn’t. The final turnout for the second “Wig!” meme that I posted is 246 views, with 1 upvote and 9 downvotes, and a comment by @MasterFlippyFloppy that says “Oxygen. Thief.” I did not find any derivatives of my meme, although my meme had a large impact on my surroundings—regarding my friends, family, and Instagram followers. Everyone who I showed it to laughed while viewing it and enjoyed it.
