Twitter Round Up

Before starting this class, I knew that Twitter was a platform that I needed to become more familiar with, especially on a professional level. Just last year I created a new Twitter account and swore I would use it to tweet about important news events and other things I was interested in, but without any followers it felt like I was talking to myself. Over the course of the semester I gained 27 new followers, and although a mere 43 followers still doesn’t feel like very many, it is in fact a 168.75% increase in followers and I have seen engagement increase seemingly with each new tweet. Similarly, I saw a 162.89% increase in my Klout score over the past 90 days.

Looking back on what worked and what didn’t, I think that as a class we were highly interactive and supportive of one another’s tweets. Moving forward, I hope we continue to communicate online and maintain the community we have developed around the #nhsmc hashtag. I also found that when I tweeted about particular trending events or hashtags I saw increased followers and engagement.

 Top 10 Tweets:

  1. School Spirit

This tweet had 103 total engagements because @RowOrange, the Twitter account for the Syracuse Women’s Rowing Team retweeted it. As a member of the team, I think that they like to retweet posts that come from the students so that parents and family members keeping up with the account can see how we are performing at races and other events. As a result, the post had 13 likes and 2 retweets.

2. Vote Plz

I tweeted this in order to try to educate some people about a website that a friend told me about. VotePlz.com made registering to vote and understanding all things about election day incredibly easy to understand. By mentioning the company and having them retweet me, I was exposed to all of their followers as well, and by using #millennials I widened my audience as well. This tweet had 1,019 impressions and 19 engagements.

3.  Labradoodle or Fried Chicken?

I tweeted this after our class skyped with Karen Zack, the creative mind behind memes comparing various food items to dogs. I think our class was particularly excited about the process of going viral after hearing her story, so when I posted this using the class hashtag, it received a lot of likes. This tweet had 31 total engagements and 591 impressions.

4. Sad Desk Lunch

I made this tweet as an example of evergreen content. I think that for the most part, people enjoy talking about food so it gained some traction, and in addition, #saddesklunch is a hilarious hashtag to follow. This combination led the tweet to 12 engagements and 554 impressions.

5. Georgetown Still Sucks!

At Syracuse, we have a huge sports culture, and we are not ashamed of putting our rival teams down. In this case, I used some Google analytics to measure how often Georgetown and Syracuse were searched. The hashtags #BigData and #GeorgetownStillSucks both contributed to this tweet’s engagement. It received 46 engagements and 547 impressions.

6. Debate Night

I published this tweet while quote tweeting one of NBC Nightly News’ tweets. The #debatenight hashtag was trending and #socialmedia often results in a lot of engagement. This tweet had 504 impressions and 9 engagements.

7. Let me take a #Selfie

As we discussed in class, seeing selfies on social media can have different affects on people, but seeing group selfies often produces positive conversation. Using the hashtag #selfie and provoking positive emotion, this post received 5 likes and 18 engagements.

8. Running on Dunkin

By using a GIF in this meme, I added some creative content to something that could have otherwise been boring. I knew that Dunkin Donuts is a highly interactive brand on social media, so I tagged them hoping they would engage, and was pleasantly surprised to see that they did. This tweet resulted in 80 total engagements and 5 hashtag clicks.

9. Barber Shop Reads

Using relevant hashtags such as #reading and #education, I expanded my audience beyond just my followers. Some of the likes and retweets came from people I wasn’t previously connected with but shared a like interest in education. This tweet resulted in 436 impressions and 7 engagements.

10. #ImWithHer

This tweet was published at a time when many people were emotional about the election. I quote tweeted a Twitter Moment in order to be part of the larger conversation about the election and Hillary Clinton’s concession speech. The tweet had 2 total engagements and 415 impressions.

Conclusion

After a semester of Twitter assignments, I am so much more comfortable tweeting, using analytics, and other forms of media such as Anchor, Periscope and GIFBoom. I look forward to expanding my network on Twitter and continuing to use it professionally.
